Hi guys. I have a question regarding reproductions. According to an article in this month's PCM, all Standard crowns with a 6 inch base are fake. Is this true? If so, I got took on the 6 inch screw base I bought a few years back. Thanks in advance for the info.

1st Crowns [with raised lettering] have a 7" flange base, next generation have a 6" screw base for the metal ring that screws on [keeps the set screws away from the glass], with the metal it measures 7". ALL crowns with a 6" FLANGED BASE are REPO.

not all flanged base crowns are repos,Standard had some early flared bases that were right. You can tell by holding the 2 in your hands as the newer ones are very light jim

Some early non lettered crowns, and all of the lettered crowns have a 7" flange base. If it has a 6" flange base its a repop.

Dick, so if mine measures 6inches at the bottom of the glass screw base and 7 inches with the metal screw on ring, it is real? Thanks for the info.

Not necessarily... They are making repros now from Time Passages I think, that have the 6" screw base. They're supposedly slightly marked. As in, it says "repo" or something inside the base, but it is really hard to read and you have to know what you're looking for. Why they'd make them withthe threaded base I have no idea. There's no need for it in my opinion - displays the same as a flanged base. It only helps the dishonest, especially being hard to read the markings. Wes

Dick, sorry about the old profile. It still had my work email address. I should have changed it when I retired. Just did it. Thanks Bob
