Hi. What do the different colors of the old Standard Oil crowns represent? I think Red Crown=Regular, White=Ethyl, Gold=Ethyl (gold crown replaced the white crown in the 1950s?), Blue=Low-Lead (or is it No-Lead?), Green=Diesel.

Were there ever any other colors (Silver Crown, etc.)? Thanks!

White = ethyl
Red = regular
Green = diesel
Orange = marine or avaition [only heard that]
Blue = solite [1 grade down from regular]
Gray = tractor ?
Gold = premium
Red & Gold = supreme [1950's]

In the new issue of PCM Scott lists a picture of a gray globe, says that is postwar deisel. I love the smell of deisel in the morning. MMMMMMMM!!

Purple= motor grade (sub-regular)
Blue= sub-regular
Red= regular
White= premium '41-'56
Gold= premium '56='61
Orange= aviation
Grey= diesel '56='61
Green= naptha (tractor fuel)
Red & Gold= regular and premium as before, but on a dual product pump.

There's also a blue Solite crown, and a couple of different Red Crown Ethyl globes.

Thanks for all the information! I had no idea there were so many different colored globes. I'm guessing the odd-colored globes (purple, orange, blue, etc.) must be very rare because I've never seen any listed anywhere, including ebay!

As far as I know there is only one Orange Crown known to exist. The Purple crown which is red and purple is a little more common but there are still only a few known.
Grey Crowns are pretty scarce too. I see a Green Crown for sale every year or two. They aren't impossible to get. I see quite a few Blue Crowns for sale. To me, many of them are suspect because the paint is too good. Scott Benjamin has a nice Blue Crown for sale right now with good original paint. The Red, White and Gold Crowns are extremely common. If you include the older raised letter crowns there are at least 18 different Standard Crowns!

Hi Iam new to the site. I was looking in the events section under victorian auction,vcaauction.com, and a standard gas pump globe lot#116 shows one black and white and it says its original and rare.

I checked out that auction listing. It looks black at first glance, but I think its a Gold Crown that is lit up. Gold Crowns don't light up very well and often look very dark.

I've seen two black crowns. Both had been repainted and had originally been blue.
