I can tell you how Eric Henn does his designs on his famous building paintings.

I had the pleasure of personally working with him when he did the one at our terminal.
He uses a projector and projects the image on the wall to get the basic image up. (Night work for outdoors).
If you know someone with a little artistic tallent you could get one of your favorite photos painted on the wall using this method.
