Plain old PPG acrylic enamel without hardener. No pin striping, flames, or fantasy schemes.

Sikkens from Germany is the best no doubt,but also the most expensive costing almost twice as much but covers twice as fast,do the math???PPG base clear is second,Valu Pro is third in my 17yrs of painting.

I prefer PPG concept single stage or bc/cc. Glassurit is very good but not as available. I always wanted to try Sikkens but haven't yet.

I use PPG DCC acrylic Urethane single stage; or base coat then some base mixed with clear then clear it I want a really deep look. Richard

Over the years @ Vic's, restoring easily over 1000 pumps, we have used everything BC/CC, urethane, laquer and Acrylic Enamel from just about every domestic company we have settled on good old fashioned Dupont Centari Ac Enamel with plenty of wet look hardner. We use it because It's quite durable, during our time with base/clear we had more problems with damage in delivery, urethane enamel is also very durable but a little more costly and in my opinion a little higher health risk when working with it, but mainly its is a good reliable and COST effective product. Bottom line is if I hit someone with a 225.00 materials bill and then the cost of clearing (double paint time) they usually are not too happy, because no matter how much money someone has everybody has their limits. Plus we stock 15 common colors and its just easier for me to go grab a quart off the shelf.

Napa's acrylic enamel,lays down nice and can be buffed if needed.Super tuff,my 5 and 2 y.o. have walked past the pumps in the house carring toys and have banged into them several times and not a chip or scatch.Has a great shine too,have used base/clear systems in past but yes they scratch easier.

In my opinion, for pumps in all one color and no metallic, a single stage acrylic enamel with hardener would be the best. If you are two-toning, striping or using metallics, a base coat with urethane clear system would be the best. Use a brand of paint from a local supplier who provides advice and support for his products. Paint surface preparation makes a bigger difference in outcome than brand names. Some of the vendors have an inexpensive fleet paint line that should work great for gas pumps. IMHO
For the record, after using PPG Deltron/Concept for the last 20 years, I have changed over to AutoColor, a European subsidiary of PPG. In automotive work, we have had better color matches, and results have been closer to the color standard and variance chips.

I like PPG bc/cc urethane, get great results, better than a single stage enamel but the single stage is alot less over all work.

To date, no more paint than I've used, the best was Dupont Nason bc/cc urethane. However, due to trying to stretch my pennies I am currently using the same system from NAPA called Crossfire. The finished product looks as good as the Nason it just takes a little more work and cussing.

For pumps I use Omine base. If you want something special you have to use the deltron base. I dont have alot of choice as there is only one paint store in town. I like the Omine base the green I use for polly is only $16.00 a quart. As for clear I use Northstar. I have a friend in the concrete supply bussiness that deals with there urathane for stained concrete, so when he has a short order he gets me a gallon of clear. I really like it it mixes 2-1-1 and lays down smoth as glass, and cuts and buffs beautiful. Best part is its only $68.00 for everthing and will do 3-4 pumps inside and out. I am no proffesional but this is whats worked for me. I have also heard good things about Standox, has anybody used this? Great topic.

I also recommend the Omni fleet line from PPG. Lower cost and good results.
I have used Standox and was very impressed with it. Their base seems thick, but it lays out nice and covers quickly. The fewer coats thing should save money and time.

Guys, please keep 2 things in mind;

1- oldgas (Jim Potts) does this for a living (mainly cars), ALWAYS listen and trust in someone this seasoned in an art form who shares some info with you!!

2- I am a rookie that doesn't need to show a profit on painting or restoring.
