Wow, the response here is great!
The skins are rusted to the point that the pitting is almost through the metal. Sometime way back,somebody painted the pump with a brush in a lovely lime green and cream (haha) vertical stripe pattern. There are some chevron decals barely visible on it.
I believe that the paint is probably the only thing holding the skins together. When I scrape the paint at the base of the cylinder, above the skins, I can see bright red paint under all the house paint.
The pump does have the small door at eye level, inside this is the switch that turns on the electric lift pump. When you close the little door, a lever opens the drain at the bottom of the cylinder. There is a brass UL tag on the inside of the little door. On the back of the pump, there is a small cover that sticks out, underneath is the shaft for attaching a manual lever. I think I am going to remove the majority of the heavy stuff inside, if for no other reason than to lighten it up.
The top piece is simply a plate that the rods go throguh to seal the cylinder there is a short threaded rod sticking up, but no dome top.
I'll try and shoot some photos today and send them to Jim for posting. With the sieral # 1781, can anybody nail down the year of manufacture for me?
