If you disagree with someone's opinion, there is no need to disrespect that person.

Just state your opinion and try to answer the original question!

I am a new member and personnel attacts are a waste of my time!

I got the point that Tony was making.

First of all I did not disrespect anybody. Second, I did answer the question on the first page of this thread before it got all complicated. What part of Tony's response was aimed at the original question?

Here is the original question.

Here was the answer to the qustion.

I apologize again if I upset anybody.

I imagine we all gave Evedog way more info that didn't really help him than he ever dreamed when he posted the question. Actual history tells us that many red pumps were repainted in service with a brush when they needed it, probably not always with paint materials recommended by the home office.

Matching to the red parts of a Skelly porcelain sign will keep you close to a historic color standard for the brand.

Good Luck, Evedog. This shouldn't be all that serious.

I am not a paint expert but I have a brother who is as close as I can get. He has been with Sherwin Williams for 40 years and I took some paint codes to him that were original Sherwin Williams codes and with the world of computers they are not the same in new codes. He took my sinclair HC globe and mixed three different paint strips and we found the right color to match globe. I know by fading paint ,new batch of paint ,what ever the next time you have the paint mixed it is not always the same as before.

Ryan,

Now that you've proclaimed your not a paint expert, I am a certified body & paint expert.

As I stated earlier, if you do not have a paint code but you do have a paint sample, a camera can and will give you a formula, if you have that formula mixed, you can then have that matched formula tinted to the desired variance by a qualified painter. I never mentioned using a spray out card first, after you have the mix, you then take your mix and your sample to a professional painter, they then will use a spray out card and tint the mix accordingly. The painter would make an exact match. The same rule applies if you have a paint code.

As for your comment about a camera getting an exact match, I never stated that. I stated the camera will give you a formula to go from. For your question of "taking a picture of an adjacent panel and poof" the fact of that matter would be taking pictures of multiple panels on the car, hood, deck lid, quarter panel, door, ect. it will then give you a formula that a qualified painter can tint exactly.

Referring to your comment on primer or sealer not affecting top coat, and being able to cover in 3 coats over black is completely absurd, and to make the reference that red is one of the easiest colors for coverage tells me that you have apparently not painted to many items.

I am simply referring to even the average Joe obtaining paint to refinish his/her pump, they would have to comply with the EPA and would either be obtaining a single stage paint or a base coat clear coat whether it is a high or low quality product the basics are still exactly the same, painting a panel flat in the horizontal position is completely different than painting the same panel in the upright position. These are basics, I am just giving information.

I have heard members talk about painting their items with a roller and house paint and I have also read posts of members asking for true professional advise, so there is a wide margin here. My offer of information is the most basic and to the point for any novice in obtaining the desirable color of his/her choice. None of these options that I have offered will cost the novice extra with the exception of a painter, may or may not charge you for a tinting fee. You can then take your products home and have the full gratification of painting your object yourself.

You also state that I have confused 99% of the members but yet your the only member that has negatively commented. I merely gave simple information to better direct members to the appropriate places for their color matching.

I don't need to name drop or give any of my certifications, this is a basic path for any and all to obtain their desired colors.

I am sorry that you have taken offense or perhaps misread my input but frankly with the vast years and experience that I have, there are not any other options than what I have mentioned in obtaining the desired color match of choice.

TONY

I can't believe I'm going to say this... but this topic has been beaten to death...

I painted my first car in 1966, under the tutelage of a painter named Jack Ruckman. He went under the name "The Beard" and owned a shop in Portland OR. He was kinda well known, as he laid the wrapper on such cars as Roland Leong's Hawaiian, Don Prudhomme's Snake, Tom McEwen's Mongoose as well as others when they raced at PIR. He also did the wrapper on my dad's Trans Am car and my 1/4 midget. He is still talked about on the H.A.M.B. website.

So I've laid just a little paint in my time.... As Jim said, painting a pump should be real simple... It can be done using a HVLP outfit, rattle can and/or simple paint brush.

As Ryan and Jim pointed out, lets make it simpler, not more complex for the person wanting to paint his/her pump.

Again, I can't believe I am saying, we should cut down on the rhetoric...

I do remember the beard, they worked on my three wheeler when it was stolen. ANY way, how about the paint color on the Marine gasoline pump that I have to do as long as you painters are thinking on this subject.

This is a Marine gasoline pump brand that has the boat on it. It is not for a water issue, but just the brand is one of maybe Sunset or another western oil company.
