I agree with what Neal says. Your prep work makes a much bigger difference in the look and durability of the finish than the name on the paint label. I really recommend a catalyzed primer-surfacer and acid-etch bare metal primer. Those two give a solid foundation for a lasting finish.
In many parts of the country lacquer is no longer available for normal use. It is a bigger air polluter and not as durable as current materials.
We have been doing a demo for a different brand of paint at work fo a couple of weeks. It was a pain to get used to different methods, products and mixing ratios. Now that I'm accustomed, I found I can do pretty much the same work with completely different materials. The secondary economy brands at your local auto paint jobber may be a very good value for restoration uses.
