I bought this Mobil license plate attachment and I am unsure if this is real or repo. Can someone tell me for sure and also how to tell the difference. It is dated 4-30-1937 I think on the backside with a pegasus pictured also. There is camera flash where the month date stamp is at.

I don't know, but it certainly looks like it could be real. I think the California Worlds Fair was in 1939 but I guess it could have been made in advance. It seems like they are usually referred to as "World's" fair, though, instead of "World" fair, but it might be a different fair.

Hmmm. I looked online and the California World's Fair was in 1939. Maybe these were made in advance and that is the date it was made?? It would make sense since they wanted to advertise it. Not sure on the World's or World fair part. I saw it used both ways online. Any Mobil guys or license plate attachment experts out there?

Keith

I am leaning towards "aged" repro on yours but I am no expert.

...even if you accept the date as legit (I don't) - why would they stamp the back with a Pegasus?

...looks like some varnish has been slopped on there, too...

...IMO, it's fake...

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

I did some Oldgas research and found an old post on these. According to Mobilford's collection California World Fair is correct and it also looks like in his second picture he has the backsides pictured and it looks to me like they are dated and also have the pegasus stamped on the backside. Here is a link to that post.

Sorry, This is a reproduction. The original has red lettering on a white background and says "CALIFORNIA WORLD'S FAIR". As stated earlier the fair was in 1939 and 1940. The latest copy of my booklet on the Socony toppers is due back from the printer this week. Only $10.00 to Old Gas members.

Regards, Dave

Is it possible that a differant type was made? It seems like an odd thing to fake, alot of effort for not much,IMO. I realize people will scam anything, but I think its not too much of a stretch to have made another variation....?????

The one with black letters looks to me real.. or at least with some age on it. Notice the black paint where it attaches even has some gloss and dull spots on it. Coca Cola used different companies to make the same signs. You can see sloppy clearcoat runs and drips on the back though. just a thought..

I would say fake due to the fact there are no "feathers" pressed in the wings.

Three companies made all the originals of the Socony toppers. All were made before 1941. The first reproductions were made in the late 60's. There are approximaxtely 30 different originals including those from Australia and Japan.

There are many variations of the reproductions. None of the originals were cast. All known variations of the originals and reproductions are pictured in my booklet "Socony Vacuum License Plate Markers".
