Ron Scobie has made new Wayne Boyle-Dayton cut 83 pump handles and mine arrived yesterday. It looks great! I asked Ron the following questions, but he said that he did not have a cut 83 himself, so could not answer my questions and suggested that I ask here. So...

1) The shaft of the pump is square. It looks like I will have to file out the square hole of the handle a little with a square file so that it will slide onto the shaft.

2) How does the handle attach to the shaft? I don't see any keeper groves and the shaft end is not threaded either inside or outside. What holds the handle on???

3) What is the purpose of the piece that sticks out of the side of the handle 1/3 of the way down from the top? Is there any finishing that needs to be done to that area? I saw a picture of Dick Bennett's handle and it has the same tab sticking out of the side. Should it have a hole in it for locking the handle? If so, what does the corrosponding part look like?

4) How much dressing and filing should be done to the handle in general? I have seen people "over-restore" Model T Fords because they cleaned up cast parts much more than Henry ever did! If Ford ever took as much meticulous care in making Mode Ts he never would have been successful!

5) Lastly, if anyone has any pictures of cut 83s either restored, restoration-in-progress, or technical diagrams, I'd appreciate them!

6) Of course, any other advice is always appreciated!

Thanks,
-Keith

Keith,
There are three versions of the B-D cut 83 pump. Cut83A is the one with the convex lip below the glass cylinder. Cut 83B has a tapered lip with a a flat rim and cut 83C has a simple flat lip. I've attached a picture from the Boyle-Dayton "Bulletins of Equipment" that shows the cut 83A or 83B handle (both the same). The projection on the handle aligns with a tab that is riveted to the pump skin. It's purpose is to provide a place to add a lock. In the Image S-218 is a 1-1/4" Eagle hasp lock. At the pump shaft M-1232 refers to a 1/2"lock bolt and S-182 is a 1/2-13 hex nut. This is a pinch connection. On Cut 83C, the last of the cut 83 pumps by Wayne B-D in 1932, the handle is held on by two bolts above and below the pump shaft.

Hi Keith,

I just got my new BD handle from Ron, too (Thanks, Ron!). Does any one have picture to assist Keith and I on proper mounting of the handle to the pump shaft? I am beginning to believe the pump and shaft on my Wayne Boyle Dayton cut 83 is the not correct/compatible with the new handle, not at least without some modification.

I have a cut 89 which should be similar. I used a file to get the taper and four square edges. Mine attaches with a half inch bolt and washer. I usually work the cast over some with a file before painting. Richard

Hey Ranchpump-
I would be delighted to get a copy of your "Bulletins of Equipment." You can e-mail me directly at kwtownsend@verizon.net

How can I be positive if I have an A, B or C? I can send you pics of the base of the galss jar frame if it would be helpful. This is the first I'v heard about cut 83 variations.
