What was the price of gasoline you remember paying for gas when you first got your license? And what are you paying tonight? ($1.70 here in S.E.Mich.)

I paid 89 cents a gallon when I got my license and yesterday I paid $2.39 per gallon

I'm trying to remember back that far,but
I think I paid around .35 cents a gallon.
Paid $1.74 today.

1976 was when I got my licence and i paid about .57/gal of gas. In 1999 I can remember getting gas for just under a $1/gal!
I think it's because gas has basically doubled in price in this area in 5 short years that we are feeling it and are upset.
But we also pay $2.00 for a 24oz bottle of designer water (or $10/gal). Gatorade is $5.00/gal(avg). And let's consider what a
gallon of gas would be compared to the price vs one's pay wages in 1920 to now:
$10.00 a gallon (choke!). Imagine that and then say to yourself....$2.00/gal ain't so bad!

When I got my license in 1952 the price was around .25 and when I opened my Shell station in 1972 the price was up to .44. The first month we had a gas price war and the price dropped to .29 and almost put me out of business. Does anyone remember what a gas price war was and do you think we will ever see one again?

When I first started driving as a teenager in 1986, I worked at a Texaco service station, and I was in charge of checking out the other gas station prices in town each day, then changing the prices on the pumps at the station where I worked. My instructions were to always be a penny less than the station down the block. I remember the prices as if it were yesterday.

The price for a gallon of full-service leaded regular was 75 cents, leaded premium 99 cents, unleaded regular 79 cents, unleaded premium 89 cents.

Tonight (in Minnesota) leaded regular is $1.59, leaded premium $1.89, unleaded regular $1.49, unleaded premium $1.59.

Very interesting that leaded gas is MORE expensive than unleaded now (it used to be the other way around)!

Gas wars....yes, very fun. We've had a few over the years. The corner stations about a mile from my house used to have some very good ones...Standard Oil, Skelly, and Phillips 66 (all full-service, by the way) fought all the way down to 45 cents a gallon! Cars woulod line up for blocks to buy at the cheapest station. This happened until just a handful of years ago, then the Phillips 66 station shut down and now no more gas wars.

Jack has me beat by a few years, but gas was 27.9 when I started. Saturday I paid 219.9.
They were always having a gas war in Escondido (35 miles n/o San Diego),if we were heading North we would always stop there and fill up. Gas was a bargain at 2 to 3 cents less a gallon.
My dad had a radiator shop and one gas station was in to him for some big bucks at the time. I would roll into the station, fill my tank and give the guy an invoice "received on account". I had free gas for almost a year, wish I could swing that today.
I know there are a few of you who don't want to hear this but it was 85 on my patio today.

I'm going to guess that gas was about 29 cents a gallon when I started driving. I paid a buck eighty-five this week.

I haven't seen leaded gas around here since 1982. The last gas war here was in 75 or 76. Instead of gas wars I think they're in collusion to keep the prices up these days.

When I first started driving, gas was down to 24.9 cents a gallon. That was in the early 70's and there was a gas war going on. I sure would like to see OPEC go at it again like they did then!!

I bought gas this morning for my little red S-10 GMC: 10.962 gallons @ $1.65.9 for a total of $18.19 (I don't 'top' off the tank. as much as I drive, another 2/10ths of a gallon doesn't make any difference).

But gas in my small home town was at $1.80.9 last night when I went to pick up my son from his wrestling meet. I can get it cheaper down by the GM Tech Center. I guess there is more competition.

Started driving at 16 in 1970 in a '61 Volkswagon which blew up inside of 3 months, and then moved to a '66 Chevy Impala that just wouldn't quit running, regardless of the beating it took. Fuel averaged 35 cents or so a gallon. Went through a small town in northern Iowa during a gas war in about '73 or '74 and filled up at 27-28 cents a gallon.
Everythings relavent, as my wages in 1970 as a school kid, grocery store part-time employee were $1.60 per hour.
