I got my license 25 years ago- right around the time gas went to a dollar. The pumps didn't go beyond $.99! They had to set them at half a buck for a dollar's worth and so on. I remember my mom getting mad at me for putting gas in her car and going way over what she had because I didn't do the math at the pump.

That was right after the manditory 55 MPH speed limit was set in place. "Stay Alive- Drive 55" was the slogan. What a joke.
Back then a pack of smokes was also like 55¢ and a bag of weed was $30 for a "lid"!
