When you mail a Full quart can..can you use either post office or UPS? Does either have a restriction on a full can? Thanks, Ron

Till they, shake it!!!

Then they can (pun not intended) destroy it, especially if you falsely declared it!!!

At that point you have no recourse re embursement.

IMO I would rather have one that was emptied...

The local post office here does not have a problem with full metal qt. oil cans, I have asked.

b. For surface or air transportation, if the flashpoint is above 141°F (60.5°C) but no more than 200°F (93°C); the liquid is in a primary receptacle not exceeding 1 gallon per mailpiece; enough cushioning surrounds the primary receptacle to absorb all potential leakage; the cushioning and primary receptacle are packed in a securely sealed secondary container that is placed within a strong outer shipping container; and each mailpiece is plainly and durably marked on the address side with "ORM-D" or "ORM-D AIR," as applicable, immediately following or below the proper shipping name. Mailable material sent via surface transportation must be marked on the address side as "Surface Only" or "Surface Mail Only." For air transportation, each mailpiece must bear a shipper's declaration for dangerous goods.

c. For air or surface transportation, if the flashpoint is above 200°F (93°C) the material is not regulated as a hazardous material. Such nonregulated materials must be properly and securely packaged to prevent leakage under the general packaging requirements in 2.0, Packaging.

Whats the flashpoint of motor oil? Surely its well over 200 degrees which would mean its not considered hazardous by the USPS.

I just say "No" to all concerns when asked and have not had problems. I ussually us USPS for cans.

Aside from your shipping issues, keep in mind the risk of damage even when well packed is higher when full. I have had many a nice metal cans show up with dents, for some reason especially in the winter months. I assume the temp changes in transporting (plane belly?) plus elevation & internal vacuum are some causes. I prefer not to have full quarts shipped laying down. The best idea someone on Oldgas gave me was to make a sleeve out of the inner tube that Carpet is rolled on, at one time the Id was perfect but don't know currently.

I have shipped several high dollar cans thru post office and UPS and I prefer UPS!
Post office always asks if package is hazardous, caustic or fragile. So I always told them it was an antique motor oil can and insured in full...I also stressed to them I double boxed with bubblewrap and peanuts....However a postal claim takes forever...So I always use UPS VERY well packed and first $1000 insurance is free!
Claims are instantanious PLUS you get to keep the damaged item...
I have run into SAME problem with thermometers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I ship full cans by the postal service all the time with no problems. I tell them it is motor oil and they write it on the top of the box. Never shipped any cans UPS but only the first $100.00 of insurance is free here.

I also shipped oil through the USPS and due to concern if it leaked the damage it could do I put the oil can in a plastic jar which would protect it from damage and if it leaked it would contain the oil....
