Hello everyone, I just bought an original glass cylinder that will need to be shipped. UPS has been chosen as the likely shipper.

Any suggestions on a safe way to package the cylinder ? These things will crack in most cases if you look at them the wrong way so I am really worried about shipping it.

Thanks in advance for the help and Happy Holidays

SW

Sorry, but I don't think UPS can transport a steel ball without damaging it. Bubble wrapped in one box, bubble wrap/peanut 1st box into 2nd box. Best bet would be to post in the transportation section to see if a fellow Oldgasser could bring it for you. JMPHYVACO

Yes send it reg.mail,or don't send it right now.
UPS has 2 men per truck and they are getting 3 feet from the porch and tossing packages. Last items I bought from old gasser one was broken, come home to find them stacked on front porch, bottom one broken.
Contact Swabby here he ships them ,and can probably help.

Wrap the cylinder in two layers or more of bubble wrap. Shrink wrap the bubble wrap and put the cylinder in sonic tube. It is available at home depot or a concrete store. The sonic tube is heavy cardboard and is used for pouring tube shaped concrete in the ground. Start on the bottom of the tube with 3/4 inch plywood, then put 2 inch pink Styrofoam, wrap the cylinder so that it fits tight into the sonic tube. Put one more 2 inch pink Styrofoam on the top, followed by another piece of 3/4 plywood. Cut the tube down to length and ship. I screw the plywood to the tube and wrap it in tape as well.

What I've done in the past is wrapped the cylinder in a moving blanket letting the blanket hang approx 6 inches past the edge of the cylinder top and bottom. Use wrapping tape to keep/ secure the blanket in place. Fold the 6 inches into the cylinder and tape in place. Then I bubble wrap it till it is large enough in diameter to snugly fit into a galvanized trash can.
Go and buy a galvanized garbage can and remove the handles from the sides and the lid. Place the wrapped cylinder in the can and then I screw the lid closed with (short no longer than 1/2") self tapping sheet metal screws to hold the lid on. I put a shipping label on the can and ship it. No mess, no fuss.

I have had cylinders shipped to me packed much the way Ryan described and they arrived perfect. Now believe this....they were shipped by the USPS Parcel Post, and this is the least expensive method to ship of any of the carriers. IF they are packed as Ryan described they are bomb proof. And besides, use the Postal Service! They need the business and I need a paycheck...I am a supervisor in vehicle maintenance, don't touch the mail, just makes sure the trucks roll.

Built small wooden crate out of 1/2" plywood, wrapped the cylinder three to four wraps and then tuck in the ends with carpet padding. Put into the crate. Have used the same crate alot. Another method but untried except for moving them is buy a storage tote, big one and do the same. Only schrink wrap to make sure it doesn't open up.

I would say Ryan has it down. Easiest safest way. Only thing I believe you will have to buy more SonoTube(not sonic) than one cylinder worth.

I shipped a few cylinders in a 1/2" screwed together plywood box about 6" bigger in width both ways and 8" longer than the cylinder. I cut 6 squares of 1-1/2" high density syrofoam and cut circles exactly in the centers exactly the diameter of the cylinder and slid them over the cylinder...one each end and two spaced in between. Two solid ones for the ends. Packed newspaper in between the spaces rather tight. Lot of work too...but I just used scraps of plywood and foam so worked out well. I shipped a 12" x 48" glass cylinder by Fedex this way. Box beat to hell...footprints all over it....cylinder was fine.
