I am wanting to purchase a crown globe, but I need to find out how to tell an original from a repo.I was thinking of putting it on a wayne visible circa 1920's but I need to know if the crown was ever originally used in the 20,s on visible pumps or should I use it on one of my 1940-1950 pumps? I have seen pic,s of them on 50,s pumps but don,t know if they acurate or not . any info would be helpful . Thanks Mike Burnett

Mike
I have a picture of my Grandfather standing in front of his gas station ( HOLT's GARAGE) in GOULD CITY MI. in 1931 , but he bought the gas station in 1925, the pumps in the picture appear to be Wayne 515s, they both have crown globes, one red one white, the pumps were there when he bought the place in 1925, and acording to some of the old timers in town ,the pumps were there at least 5 years earlier which would put the globes on Wayne pumps at about 1921 , I hope this helps

Hey Mike,

My Dad Had a Standard Station in Hidaway Park (now Winter Park Colorado) back in the late 40`s early 50`s and he had a white crowns and red crowns on his bowser electric pumps. I got pics of them. I would say that Standard used crowns from tthe early 20s to late 40s - early 50s. Hope this helps you out!!

Standard Oil used one piece globes as early as 1912. Original "Crowns" usually have a screw bottom, repros have a regular flanged bottom.

Most originals crowns have a 7" base ,reproductions a 6" base .The crowns with letters on the rim example RED CROWN ETHYL DO NOT have a screw on metal bottom .There is a nice blue crown w/ the original box on E-BAY now .Good luck REX.

A year or two ago an original crown globe mold was found and is being used to make reproduction globes with repro metal screw-on bases. I don't know the size of the base. But repros can be either screw-on base or flanged glass.

Dr. Dent....I can make this real easy for you. We've got reproduction crowns available for shipment all the time AND we've got an original Red crown for sale also. You could take your pick.

O.k., so one more time. What about a white crown, no raised letters, a 7" base, but the base is Flared rather than threaded... likely original?

Sorry to be so dence, but have become abit paranoid about the repros.

EARLY Crowns RAISED LETTER ie: RED CROWN, SOLITE, RED CROWN ETHYL & etched GASOLINE have a 7" flared base.
THREADED BASE Crowns w/ 7" adapter, are later [MADE INTO THE 50'S].

Some repos have the RED CROWN raised letter, BUT have a 6" flared base. ANY Crown with a 6" flared base are REPO.

Brian, I have never heard of a plain white Crown, with a 7" flared base.

Some visible pumps were still being made in the late 30's, for use on farms or in remote locations.

I would say original but like Jim said they are starting to repo them in 7" base. This is the reason repo's need to be marked! If they are not marking them, than that will scare everyone and the crown globes will really drop in price like the 1 piece globes have. I would buy a repo for the pump and wait and find an original later on an old farm or something. If you put the pump outside than put a repo on it for sure. You have a hard time telling if it real or not sitting in front of you... you are not going to know if it is repo or not sitting 9 feet in the air.

Looking for anything from Hoosier Pete, Platolene 500 and Red Bird.

Brian,
If you have a NON Lettered white crown with a 7" flanged base I can understand your confusion. ALL original 7" flanged crowns should have raised letters.
Double check the size of the base. If its actually 6" then there's absolutely no doubt that its a repro. If it is 7" then you might have a new discovery. Standard started using White Crown's in 1932. That's the same time they quit using the raised letter globes. I would think that its possible they could have made some flanged 7" base non-lettered globes before the change over to screw base globes.
Is it a dealer that has the globe? See if you can trace its history. If you can't be sure pass it up. White Crowns are common.
Bob
