My TOKHEIM 850 that Dad got from a gasoline distributor for $50 in 1951 for farm use had no holes in the skins but had a BIG problem of vapor locking on a hot summer day. We used to have to remove the skin and pour a bucket of cold water over the plumbing to get the pump to pump. We put up with this problem until it was replaced with a newer (70s TOKHEIM) in the early 80s. My 850 was made in 1935 and think maybe the holes were drilled in later models as to maybe eliminate this problem. I'm sure someone on here knows the answer for sure. As many times as we took the skin off, it's amazing that it wasn't left off permanently like many of the other doors, blown away or got covered up.
