Nope. That's a false front and the brick in the center of the medallion matches all the rest of the brick on the facade.

Actually, the building was already pretty fancy what with the multiple hanging sconce lights (6 in total) and the fanlights above the three exterior doors.

Also a 30" Texaco sign would explain why, in the photos, the sign doesn't seem to fill the medallion.

Thanks. A higher res copy of that photo suggests that one of the signs says "TIRES & BATTERIES", but I can't even begin to guess what the other two say.

Here are two pics from today. One shows the sandblasting underway near the top of the south facade, the other shows the west facade with the windows exposed and the old women's room door.

They certainly did you stain glass in some of the gable ends back then. The 22" & 13"

By the way: The accent brick on this station is a glazed yellow.

The only early Texaco colors I'm familiar with are green & red. When did they use yellow?

See that chimney in the background of the top pic on this page?

Some years ago, a guy who had just been released from either the local jail or the state pen decided to break into the liquor store by dropping down the chimney, Santa Claus style. It, apparently, never occurring to him that there was no more than a 10" wide hole at the bottom of the chimney.

So, one of the employees had to go down to the basement of the gas station to get some inventory the next morning and heard this guy yelling from inside the chimney (there's no longer a boiler or furnace attached, just a metal panel over the flue opening.

Anyway, they call the fire department and they haul the guy out of the chimney and send him right back to the pokey. He may not be in prison anymore on that breaking and entering rap, but given his comparative lack of intelligence, it seems likely that he's back in prison for something or another.
