Good evening all, hopefully someone can answer a few questions about Nationa A-38s. I have a chance to buy one from a local antique shop for about $400.00, haven't been close to it yet store was closed but could see the price tag on it, It appears that the side panels are pretty dented. I checked most of the link sites but see that no one offers them? Are they hard to find and are the other parts hard to find? The pump has the original Shell add glass in it and the Shell clamshell metal pump sings, the paint is fades on the signs. Should I repaint the signs and if I do will it destroy there value? Thanks in advance for any information?

Sure does sound [smell] fishy.
Why would the sides be rough and still have original ad glass ? The A-38 should have either porceline or decal signs, not painted.
IF the ad glass are original, $400 would be a steal, KEEP the glass, part out the pump and recover some,if not all your investment. Then buy a pump in better condition.
BEWARE
repo ad glass is made for the A-38

from what I can see throught the window the ad glass appears to be original, the side panels are dented along the bottom. The signs may be porcalin that is badly faded. Hope to learn more tomorrow if the store is open. No business hours posted, so I have to keep going by the place until I see it is open.

Cop's, Dick is right about the add glass, but if you love the looks of the National pumps like I do 400.00 is cheep, in this part of the country A-38's are scarce so 400.00 would be a good price if it was a solid pump with no rust holes, most of the A-38's I've seen around here are so rusty that a bird could fly through them and not get hurt. I think it's a deal but that just my opinion.

Some of those antique places are not firm on their prices. Make an offer. They might take less especially if there is a question about originality. If there is good paint under the sign, it is probably original. Porcelain does fade especially if it was facing south or up for many years. I'd say the price is cheap as you don't find very many A-38's here. Let us know how you come out.

Just to give you another comparison.I know
a guy here with a A-38 for sale,It's a pretty straight pump.He wants $1000 for it
with no add glass.If you like the pump. $400
would be a good buy here.
