I notice you see way more 1qt oil cans than the 5qt cans. Are the big boys worth more or are they both just as common?

This is more than likely going to be one of those "debatable" subjects, especially to the can specialists! I for one like the bigger cans and feel, from what I've seen, that they are more scarce than quarts. The "argument" I've heard is that there are more one quart collectors than 5 quart collectors, so even though they may be more scarce, they do not have the desirability of the quarts. I for one think the bigger cans are more impressive than quarts, and if you have the room, buy them!
Normally quart versions of a can in top condition will sell for more than a five, but there are the exceptions. Some flat out rare 5 quarts like Polly or Gilmore always bring super money in top or above average condition. The price may not necessarily reflect it, but I think the 5 quart Marathon Endurance can is tougher to find than the quart, but they seem to bring comparable money. I'm curious to see what the other replies are to your query.

I've often thought that I should find more 5 quart cans (out picking) then 1 quarts because a 5 quart gets saved where a 1 quart is used and tossed. Unfortunately in my experience that isnt the case, but may be for others.
1 quart oil cans only have any value at all because they were in general thrown out immediately after being emptied, otherwise we'd have more survivors - a prevalent theme in this hobby

It has been my experience that a number of people don't collect 5qt and other larger sized cans because of the amount of space they command...
I know that for me, it was an "eye opening" experience when I saw my first 5qt can sitting next to a 1qt....
I had collected only a few 5qts in the past because of the space they took up, when compared to 1qts...
In this latest version of my collecting, I have narrowed my search mostly to Veedol cans.. As such, I now try to display each of the different designs of the brand. I try to have a separate display that includes; a US 1qt, US 5qt and when possible a Canadian Imperial qt can....

It was a complete oil change W/ a 5qt can [for most cars], but by buying a case of 24qts you got 4 complete oil changes Plus 4 qts to add in between.
In the maple syrup areas of the country, the 5qt cans were used for collection tins & are harder to find any that weren't re-used.

I like which ever is more hard to come by. Like a 5qt Quaker State vs a Quart. Or say a 1 Qt Antifreeze vs 5 Quart.
You dont see many full 5qt cans around, the odd one. I prefer the hard to come by, vs 1 specific size.
Off topic, but my favorite is 5 Gallon, but space limits that.
