Hey guys, Ok heres the question, while i was out at an antique shop I came across a Texaco globe on a capco body. This is the "newer" version with the black boarder around the "T". The lenses are in mint condition and the capco is only slightly discolored.What struck me as strange is the inscription "Offically Licensed Product" at the bottom of the globe. The dealer swears that it is legit and is asking 225.00 -not a bad price for a globe in cherry condition. now is this real or fake? All the globes I have or have seen say a date or REG. US. PAT. OFF on them. I have also met some dealers who have the same type of globes (licensed product) and say they are repo. Is this globe a gem or a dud? I want it but I dont want to get ripped off. As always you guys are the best.....Thanks.

Absolutely, positively a reproduction.
The "T" in the TEXACO trademark was outlined in black PRIOR TO 1944. The trademark in which the "T" is outlined in white is the newer of the two versions.
In addition, all original legitimate signage had either "Reg. T. M." or the "circled R" mark centered below the star. And they damn sure didn't say "Officially Licensed Product" on them, anywhere.
Your dealer either doesn't know what HE's talking about or hopes that YOU don't.

Ryan, check out the repro petro magazines like "Vic's Place" or Weber's" and you can buy this globe for anywhere from 50-80 bucks, depending on if they are having a sale. Put the balance back in your pocket (say, $175) and go out and buy an original Dino globe or take your wife to a nice weekend retreat or something.....

Everyone:
Inexpensive reproduction globes are available on E-bay. Search for User I.D. name 'Kellglobes@aol.com'. This seller usually has 1 - 2 dozen repros for sale at any one time for either $69 or $49. All are 'Buy it Now' prices with only $10 shipping and handling. Why pay $85 apiece and shipping and handling above and beyond that?

Thank you to everyone for your responses .Im not going to buy the globe. Im really glad us petro collectors have such a great site, without you guys I would be the proud owner of a 225.00 repo. Thanks again!

Probably wouldn't be a bad idea if you're back that way to inform the antique dealer of the difference between repro and original. If he's honest, he'll look into it--if not, he won't do anything about it anyway. I wouldn't want anyone else to get robbed like that!
