I restored an ERIE 450 clockface, and left the guts out. I had to build brackets to hold the clocks in place, The finished pump was very light, and looked fine, but to me it did not seem real. [Sorta like restoring a car and leaving the engine out] I finally took it apart and put the guts back in it. Also most pumps I have, I washed thru the pumps with soapy water, and was never bothered with old gas smell..RD
