I know this has been discussed before,so forgive me. I don't think I banked it in the memory.
I fixed up a 15 inch red hat lense and a blank in a high profile steel body for the grandsons birthday. Its the biggest night light you ever seen.
Put a small round 25 watt bulb in it and it lights up the bottom well but not the top.
Any suggestions as to what watt bulb,I'm thinking tall slim line bulb but havn't went looking. Whats the max watts you guys use.
Thanks in advance

I like the new bulbs, they have vitrually no heat so you can use a higher watt bulb. I use the equivilant of 60s and they last for years.

When I restore gas pumps. I extend the conduit for the light blub so that the blub is situated in the center of the globe body versus at the base. I use a 13 watt compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) which is the equivalent of a 60 watt incandescent light blub. CFL's consume less energy and hardly produce any heat.

Dave you are on to the answer. I'm looking at it and the bulb is not centered,as I used a pre wired base from gas pump heaven.
Probably would be perfect for 13.5. may add to conduit tommorow, and go look for different bulb.I;m just to pickey ,probably no one would notice but me.

Check out Home Depot, they usually carry the long skinny light bulbs used in fish aquariums. The screw in as all bulbs do but are much longer....around 6 inches, which would light up a higher area of the lense. Paul www.severngaspumps.com

This is the exact same thing I do.

Ding, ding ding, Dave's the winner.
I've been doing that too. But, I like an incandescent bulb as it gives a yellowish and more nostalgic feel.

About five years ago or so, I saw some original globe light extenders on ebay. I think there were four or five of them. They brought good money, I have not seen any since.

I thought they were cool, they just screwed into the original light socket and were basically an extension.

FREEDOM oil items wanted.

I picked up a bag full of original globe light extensions a few months ago, thought I would get around to rewiring them and using on my pumps when I get around to restoring them. I have used the long bulbs and the compact florescents and pretty pleased with both. I've used the CF on ad glass as well, but you usually have to buy the "short" ones. Brady

I just googled light bulb extensions and there are several out there, pretty cheap. Here is a link to one that had two or three different ones. It doesn't say exactly how long they are though. Sure would be easier than rewiring the pump...Gary

This one might be better:

Rabbitman's second link looks really promising. At $3.00, who could do it cheaper. It also says they are safe to stack if you need more extension. Thanks for the idea. Much easier and just as safe as dismantling and adding counduit or tubing.

Here's what I've been using for extenders, usually one will do and easy to find at the hardware store. I've also been using 4 watt LED bulbs.

Thanks for everyones input. Lots of good methods. I went and bought daves bulb-13 watt compact CFL = to 60 watt incandescent.
Too bright and still had the bright spot under the red hat. Also bought a long slender bulb that they use to light aquariums, and it seem to do the trick. As we were shooting for a night light.
It was a big hit with the Grandson,as he had laid claims to this globe when I 1st put it together.
One extender and and the 13 watt would work great for a pump globe as it would put it right behind center.
