Here is the sign from a thread I had a few days ago. I was looking for some feedback as to how often this sign has been seen. It is double sided and very heavy. Even the bracket at the top is porcelain. The bracket is part of the sign.

That is the sign I was sure you were talking about Bigfoot....while I wouldn't consider it "rare", I would consider yours in rare condition, it's the nicest I've ever seen by far. Socony Vacuum was using shields at the same time this sign was produced, so I'm personally unsure of the exact purpose of these rectangular signs. My initial thoughts are they replaced existing rectangular SOCONY signs in that territory. You must not have seen a larger shield up close as they have the same porcelain T-bar at the top. Beautiful sign, you should be proud to own it! Darin

Thnx guys I have a later 1950 Shield about the same size or slightly bigger and that T frame is not present. And I have not looked at one "up close" ever that had the bracket. Except on EBay ,...but I have not focused on the bracket or attaching hardware. If anyone has any ideas on the best way to "hang" the sign I think I might need the advice. There are two factory holes at the top but I imagine there is a better way.

My initial thoughts are they replaced existing rectangular SOCONY signs in that territory ...that sounds like the most logical explanation to me...
Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

These signs had specific brackets which bolt to the flat part of the built in bracket. Same design as the large SOCONY sign.
