Received a call from Ebay "Seller assistance team" today. Ebay is raising their fees...again to 10% final value fee. In return for this fee hike Ebay is eliminating listing charge on fixed price items. These all apply to a low volume seller, like me. Many of you may have caught this fee hike but it was news to me. Takes effect about mid April.

This, along with taking a cut of shipping , then Paypal fees, then soon they will be collecting sales tax for all states, will soon have them priced out of the market.

I was being sarcastic. To describe eBay as greedy is an understatement.

I think if we take a hard look that is why sell it on Old Gas is in more demand. May be time for a small listing fee.

According to wiki answers, ebay reports that they have average of 112 million listing at any given time. It doesn't appear that raising fees is hurting their business. Supply and demand, push it till it squeaks and then back off a little. Fortunately if we don't like it, we have other avenues like Oldgas, Fordbarn, Craigslist, local auctions or newspaper classified ads. Ebay has a larger audience than any of the above. I guess the question for each of us is it worth 10% of our selling price to reach that larger audience. By the way, I'm not in any way endorsing ebay, just stating some simple facts.

Sellers could/should voluntarily donate a percentage to oldgas.

I agree. In the semi free society in which we live no one has a gun to your head making you use ebay. It is an economic choice. Of course, the 10% final fee is just on the item. Added to that is a fee on shipping ( seems like this is not legal but I guess it must be) and fee on PayPal money transfer. With shipping fee and Paypal fee the total tab for selling an item on ebay is more like 15%.

Part of the real problem causing the rates to go up is all the people who end auction early and sale out of auction to avoid paying the proper fees. Same goes for all the request for "Gift Payments" on paypal when in fact the payment is for an items you are buying. Think about all the people who list things with extream high prices just to cause a buyer to start up a conversation about the price, and the item gets sold out of auction for a better price and no ebay fees. Those of us that play by the rules, pay for this game.

No different than the health care cost here in the US right now. Those of us who pay for insurance are in most cases paying more to cover all the people who do to the ER with no coverage!

Just my two cents.

Unlike health insurance "I don't have" people have a choice to list on ebay, Just as everyone else has stated. I have listed items there but i try to set my prices to off set the fee's and so forth, although its hit and miss, I started to us more local sites like Craigslist first. I would rather people live than die, and my product sell then sit dormant, someone needs to make another site with one flat fee, with an occasional raise to cover inflation and so on, but not millions for greed.
