So my first big show under my belt. Had a great time!!! It was nice to meet a few Oldgasers. Probably talked to some more not even knowing who they were. Everyone I talked to were very good friendly people!!
Saw some incredible pieces!!! Unfortunately I'm a little to poa to afford the ones I wanted. Like the Sunoco Diamond flange sign. I wished I hadn't even seen that one. Oh well, another day. Did pick up a really nice '47 mobilgas PPP.
One crazy part was I arrived Friday at about 4PM and some people were literally already packing up to go, saying the main excitement had already gone down between like 4am Thursday and about Friday noon. So by Friday afternoon things were winding down outside. Luckily the Friday evening room to room was very cool with many nice pieces to be seen. And the free drinks at the hotel bar was very nice.
My first auction experience was pretty damn exciting. There was a guy sitting next to me keeping some kind of tally on his auction card. It totalled near 20 grand! I don't know if this was money spent or what but the whole thing was crazy as to how much money was in that room and what people spend on this stuff.
Even as a rookie it was hard not to love that Sinclair Aircraft!! And the story about the picnic table was nuts!!
Matthews auctions runs a GREAT operation from what I saw!! And I spoke to him a little on Friday night as I looked at some pieces. He was being pulled in many directions and still took the time to talk. Great job guys and gals of Matthews. The only item I bid on was 46 MobilOil plate. I was shocked to see it go either $500 or $550. I couldn't spend that on a non-Sunoco piece.
So had a great time and cannot wait until next year!! As Noah said, gonna start saving now!

HAHAHA. Had to stop at 500 on it. The wife gave me a budget. Wish i could have got that one. It was nice.

Did you get the matching MobilGas as well. I thought it would have been cool to get both of them. Both being from 46.

I thought auctions were where you could get things at better prices? Sure didn't seem like it here. There was tons of competition up till I left. Which I admit was a little early. Somewhere around lot 180-200 or something.

Someone was selling across the street from motel on wednesday even after ALL THE WARNINGS not too...
Hotel doesnt own that property!

What a show and what a great time with many old and new friends. This show,out of all of them, I feel is the best chance to meet, talk and get to know people. I just got home to California with a pile of small signs, they all fit in my carry on. When I opened the carry on there was an inspection card from the NTS, I wonder what they thought when they saw 12 old signs???
Can't wait for next year and only a month until we start our annual two week drive to Iowa. See you all there

I agree ray it's a great show to set back and talk with other collectors. Good stuff always shows up and it has a great hotel set up. One of the things I like the most about this show and I'm sure some dont, is that they don't allow early setup. So as a collector I don't have to be a day early I can be there at 5 on Thursday and that's when it starts. Everybody seems to get a chance at the good stuff.

Had a good time too, nice visiting with you all. Here's the date for next year: 6/20 - 21/2014.

Well finely made it home and the van made the last 60 miles of the trip on a rollback to the shop. Rear axle seal. Makes life interesting.
