Good Morning,
No one has approached this topic but I can't help but think about the old gas members that may be in trouble over hurricane Katrina. What got me thinking about the topic is all the directors of large university environmental health and safety depts like mine across the country have offered assistance to Tulane University plus LSU-NO and are going down several at a time for two week shifts in a couple months(maybe far later the way things are going according to officials I talked to this morning) under FEMA'S guidance to try and get the schools back up and running yet make sure there are no issues of disease, mold ect. the list goes on and on ,that could harm the students and staff. Their main campus has damage but no where near what some other areas have experienced. I don't know what if anything oldgas.com could do for now. I guess at this time all we can do is keep our fellow old gassers in the affected areas in our thoughts and prayers as I am sure we have some collectors or friends of the hobby that are in serious trouble. With gas at $6 in Atlanta , $4 in Chicago and $3.20 here in DeKalb, maybe we all won't be venturing out as far as we use to. We locked in the $ amount per therm for natural gas three wks ago for our main campus of 25,000 students and it was nearly double last yr. Maybe I will just shut my house down and live out in the garage with my car /gas collection and the dog, don't know what the wife would say about that! What a mess, just thought I would touch on the topic, take care. Rob

First off it's good to see you posting.
You're right, some of our fellow collectors have probably been affected. I'm sure many Shop Talk members would want to help out, but aren't sure what to do.
I salute you and your colleagues for what you are doing to help out.

I URGE EVERY READER ON HERE TO GIVE, GIVE TILL IT HURTS TO THE AMERICAN RED CROSS or SALVATION ARMY IN YOUR AREA. THEY WILL MAKE SURE THAT HELP IS GIVEN WHERE IT IS NEEDED.

AS WITH ANY DISASTER, THE SCAMMERS ARE ALREADY AT WORK !

DO NOT GIVE CREDIT CARD #'S TO SOLISITOR CALLERS THAT SAY THEY ARE WITH THE "RED CROSS". CALL THE RED CROSS LISTED IN YOUR PHONE BOOK.

If anyone could devise an honest plan to sell some items (charity auction) and donate all of the proceeds to Red Cross on behalf of oldgas.com, I would donate a sign or globe.

I have heard there is a way through ebay to do charity auctions but will have to research that.

My wife and I have already donated money to the Red Cross yesterday. How bout the moderators just pick someone and let's start sending them our checks. Let's get the ball rolling and show how much of Americans we really are. Give till it hurts, Great words Dick.

sue and i have donated to the red cross. man.. it breaks our hearts to see people walking in that water with a bag over their head knowing thats it.... thats all they got. everything they had... gone. just make sure you give to a legit organization. unfortunately, the scammers will be out there.

I think instead of putting anyone in charge, it's better & easier for EVERYONE to give to their LOCAL chapter. IT WILL GET TO WHERE IT IS NEEDED FASTER.

I will echo Dick's recommendation of the Red Cross. You can donate online and get the resources in the hands of those who need help quickly. http://www.redcross.org/

A friend of Oldgas.com, Byron Benford, lives in Gulf Shores, Alabama. That is on the eastern edge of the affected area. He had some damage to his house, but not bad. Lost power for two days but back on now. Gasoline is in short supply there.

Way to go Ralph!

Great news today. We just heard from my wife's sister and husband who live in the New Orleans area. They are safe with minimal damage to their house. They are definately some of the lucky ones. We were really happy to here from them today.

IF YOU CAN GIVE $ TO THE RED CROSS PLEASE DO SO TO HELP THESE PEOPLE.
