I am feeling a little reflective tonight and wanted to share my unique (some may say weird) feelings about why we collect these 300 lb. metal monsters. I got home from work tonight and realized something, I JUST LIKE HANGING AROUND MY OLD GAS PUMP COLLECTION! It makes my complicated life seem so simple, like Mayberry. I'm in the process of building a barn to store my old babies in so I can get them out of my garage (3 car) and get my shop set up so I can jump on getting these babies restored. When I'm hanging around these 50+ pumps, looking them over and dreaming about how they'll look, I also think about how hard and dependable theses works of art are and how well they did their job. I also think about how many stories were told in front of these pumps at their ancient locations. I also think about how these pumps probably and deservingly made a lot of money to the owner(s) of the filling station. While destiny may have desgined for these old, worn out and inefficient pumps to end up in the scrap yard, our group has extended their lives which they so well deserve! THEY ARE NOT YET READY TO BE PUT TO REST!! Am I sounding flakey!! Sincerely Neal Dunn aka gpf

Sounds perfectly sane to me! I've had thoughts like this too...only the globes were the ones listening to the stories!

I'm the same way, I need to be around them, gas pumps that is, I can just sit down in the middle of my shop and stare for hours, and I never ever get tired of it. I used to drive past those yards, you know the ones, junk everywhere. Stacked up cars, old pumps, tractors, stationary engines, cast iron graveyards, and always thought how can they stand to look at that mess day in day out. But now I understand, its 200 years worth of projects to dream about painting and chroming and polishing.

I can relate---I built a new shop (for my business, to work in, to make money)My office(where the pumps and signs live) is a thousand square feet. I coulda had two more work bays!!!

There is no cure('cept to buy more stuff!)

This a not a Hobby it's a disese, And there is NO cure. LOL

WE never really own them, WE are temporary caretakers, till it is time to pass them on to the next caretaker. The best caretaker is one that pays for the privilege [they have an investment to protect]. To pass it as a gift, the caretaker has nothing to lose by storing it in a shed or under a tree.
WE are preserving the past, for the future.
