I worked at a Sunoco station when I was young,I remember the pumps had Contains Lead signs and under them was a same style sign that said it is unlawful to dispense gasoline into unapproved containers by order of state fire marshal. It was required by Kentucky and may other states.I have never seen any available for sale or reproduction.Any body on here have one that can post a picture of one.It was porcelain and same size as the contains lead. Thanks Terry

It may have been a requirement of the city, county or state you lived in, not a federal law.
What was the period of time you worked in a station?

That was about the time I was a Shell dealer, none of my pumps had that sign.

I've seen those in Vinyl Stickers, but not any in porcelain.
