this sign is on a gas station in downtown antioch.Any ideas what it might be?is it possible to remove the paint without d amaging the original sign,thanks mick

DITTO (FIRESTONE). IF SIGN IS DEF PORC. THEN PAINT REMOVER IS YOUR SAVIOR. GOOD LUCK!

Get that thing down and get out the Citri Strip. That should be a nice Firestone sign and worth the effort. Probably red and white (newer) or hopefully orange and blue (older).

If you get it let us see the process as you strip it.

the owners are out of town for a couple weeks.ill be checking.soon i will post a pic of this station,used to be rays shell,and if i won the lotto i would buy this and restore it any idea what i should offer for it?i know its one of those things that might or might not be worth it,and yes,i would like to get it!

If it is porcelain, it will look like that, if it is paint. well you got your work cut out for you...

okay guys got the sign,another guy in there today,said he was the owner and i could have the sign for twenty bucks,got it for 15.now i believe it is definatly painted,some red showind underneath.i tried a little stripper on the back,and it took the paint off.any ideas on how i should go about this?by the way the back is green colored.any and all ideas will be appreciated thanks mick

If you find a way to get paint off a painted sign without damaging the sign itself please post it on here.

If the top layer doesn't adhere well, you might be able to scrape it off with a razor blade. My experience is with cars, not signs though...

I'M CONFUSED... YOUR SAYING THAT IT'S A PAINTED METAL OR TIN SIGN? OR IT'S A HEAVY PORCELAIN ENAMELLED SIGN WITH PAINT ON IT!
IF IT'S A PAINTED OVER PORC SIGN...CITRI-STRIP WILL KICK SOME GASS AND CLEAN THAT PAINT RIGHT OFF GIVING YOU WHATEVER IS UNDERNEATH.

i believe its a painted metal sign,not porcelan.supose if there is no way to remove top layer only,could always have the firestone repainted on the metal

No Razor Blades!!! Sounds like it may be a painted tin sign. DO NOT SCRAPE IT! It all depends what they used to paint over the sign. If it was a water based latex paint... you're in luck (maybe). Use a generic paint remover... gently, and wipe carefully to expose the original patina. Beyond that... you may have a problem removing the overcoat without harming the original sign... You bought it at the right price. Good Luck, be careful, and you may find a real treasure under the surface.
