Anyone have any experience using any type of acid to remove a glass cylinder from the bottom jar lid? Been working on this one for weeks trying to get it loose. Have tried oven cleaner, several grease dissolvers, etc., nothing seems to breakdown whatever goop was used to seal it - it's like concrete.
Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.
Note to DB - No, I am not going to use a hammer on it!

I have done some scraping with a dental pick and also some soaking with brake fluid. I have had some out within an hour and some over a 2 week period.
Be patient and don't force it. If you get down to the metal let it soak until it leaks or soaks through. Then fill it again and repeat a few times.

Again I agree with Sean, liquid softeners and dental pick. Do not use any screw drivers or punches, as this will scrape the glass. Never had a problem just do not breath the dust.

Looked it up - that's probably what they used to seal this particular cylinder. Looks like it was pretty popular stuff back in the 30's. Was thinking about trying muratic acid to loosen it up but that stuff looks to be a bit nasty.

Thanks Sean, I'll give the brake fluid a try vs acid, looks like the lesser of two evils.

Just got my Roman today and I removed the cylinder in 30min. Lol. I have had one like yours and I got so tired of getting it out after a few weeks I almost thought about just breaking it (it was cracked already)

This one isn't cracked (yet) but it sure as hell is trying my patience. I'll let you know how the brake fluid works - hopefully it will.

I had good luck with a mixture of acetone and automatic transmission fluid. Seemed to turn the litharge to mush. Had to use several applications and let it soak for several days. Dug it out with a O-ring pick. It does take lots of patience. Don't give up and good luck!
