To CLEAN the computer, I use Simple Green Concentrate. I have a 5 gallon plastic oil drain bucket and keep about two gallons of straight strength SG in it( you can reuse by letting contaminants settle and pouring off usable liquid) I break the computer in half by unbolting the wheel mechanism from the bottom calibrating cannister. This is a simple process since one shaft connects the two. I soak both halves separately and clean with a small nylon brush. Then I pressure wash with hot soapy water. Then you can lubricate the mech to spin freely. The solution will cut the grease and will cut the old gasoline haze formed on the wheels and the metal. Also works well for cleaning gas haze off sight glasses. I live in town and have to keep the Fire Dept. happy using only non flammable and biodegradable solvents. If the # wheels are badly oxidized, they are going to wash off no matter what you try to clean with.
And..... if the number paint is coming off anyway, I take them to my friend and he soaks the really nasty ones in his radiator cleaning tank.
