I got an incomplete S.S.E. 134 (I think) the other day. SSE = Service Station Equipment, pump is similar to Bennett 76.

Some of the parts were missing, and the guts are different than most pumps I have been around.. At the bottom there was a tall cylinder mabe an accumulator similar to the grey one in a Bowser but bigger and heavier. The lower end of this bolted to the pump I think that went over sideways. Now above this is a cast iron triangular sort of cage. Shaft comes up into this from the pump? unit to about the centre of this cage. End of shaft looks like a rubber belt type coupler, like on car steering in the 60,s. So I assume the motor bolted on the top of the trangular cage and fastened to the coupler driving the pump.

Now just below the coupler was a bevel gear, about 3 1/4 across the gear face, it is on the shaft going to the pump. Now I am wondering why it is there?? The only thing I can think is it drove something else that is missing or there is another gear missing and a bracket?, and its function was to hand crank the pump. I am thinking maybe they would have this in case of power failure??

Anyone ever seen this??, pump is probably Bennett.

Most electric pumps consist of a pumping unit a meter ,motor, air eliminator.
On the early Bennett computer pumps,541 and later models the meter sits directly on top of the pumping unit and the air eliminator is built into the pumping unit. It has been a while since I have seen the guts of a 76 so I am not sure if the pump/meter/air eliminator configuration is the same.

dodo this is my bennet 132 which has a hole in the skin to put in and turn it manually.was told a cranks from an old ford would work
Shot with KODAK CD33 ZOOM DIGITAL CAMERA at 2007-08-17 had to move this cause it was leanin back,good thing i did cause it looks like somethin was makin its home ther!musta been 2 five gallon buckets of dirt there,and it wasnt there when i put the pump there!!

That's what those gears for...
I saw a pic in the 70's where there was a storm that knocked out all power. They took the door panel and side panel off the cabinet and had taken the rear tire off a bicycle and had a long fanbelt from the pump pully to the rear wheel of the bicycle.

I have basically the same set up for a WAYNE 60 hand crank, when they lost electric power.

There were lots of pumps with the capability of hand pumping. Most people when they find an old pump they think that the hole was done afterwards and they fill it when restoring. I wouldn't!

I have seen pumps that had 2 pulleys and a V-belt, that would be easy to hook up to a bike.

This gear is about 1 foot off the ground, I would like to get the missing piece or see it, I could make it but easier to be close to correct if I see it.

Anyone got an idea what a proper cranl looked like or would you use a 1/2 or 3/8 drive speeder handle??

Before I spent much time Hand cranking or Peddling, I would find a way to power with the rear wheel of a car !

That hole is too close to the base [no room to crank], probably for electrical.

USE YOURS !

Just do like everyone else DB...
If it is work....hire an illegal to crank it for you.
You can find one, get the job done, faster than you could hook up a belt to a car rim.

It's just ironic that INS can't find one that fast.
