I take, Cash, Visa, Mastercard, Paypal and offer 30 days same as cash if that's what it takes to get it done. To paraphrase the old gun dealer from Indy. "I don't want to make any money folks, I just love to sell signs!!!"

Wait!! I think I'm seeing something!! Yes, there is it is! My vision has told me that there will likely be a very nice Sunoco flange sign at Peotone this year.

Peotone 2014 was the first show I've ever attended and it will most likely be my last.

Flew into Chicago from Minneapolis early Sunday morning, rented a car, and headed South to Peotone.

Weather was better than expected and it was not a issue with traveling.

I was very dissapointed in the amount of vendors and the prices they had on stuff. In my opinion, only a couple out of the approximately 20 vendors were acutally there to sell stuff. The prices were completely untouchable and unreasonable. I could have shopped ebay on many items I saw there priced at double or more what ebay sellers are ASKING. Good exmples were Pontiac Oakland signs (cheapest at Peotone was $1800 and the most expensive was $2750).

While some sellers were slightly negotiable, others were not and nearly all very grossly overpriced on everything from porcelain signs, to gas globes, to soda collectibles, photographs, magazine clippings, matchbox cars, etc.

I saw 7up items (plastic and newer) on someone's table for over $700! Another good expample was the milk glass shell gas globe. I have one of these for sale on ebay this week with a starting bid of $649. The one at Peotone was not as nice as mine and it was $1750 firm! UNREALISTIC!

There were not very many quality porcelain signs at all and even less that were actually for sale (Priced in such a way that nobody would ever buy them). Most vendors seemed to be there more for fun similar to the old car guys at the back to the 50's car show in Minnesota. They are there for the show and to meet other gassers, not really planning on buying or selling unless they can make a major score.

As someone looking to spend money, I (and I know I'm not alone) was dissapointed in the show overall to say the least. It was much smaller than I anticipated, had terrible prices overall, and the quality of merchandise was just not there. Lots of junk / reproduction items.

Luckily against all odds, I found a nice gentleman from NY who was packing up his trailer (the only outdoor vendor) and had a couple of things worth buying. I also picked up one sign from a Minneapolis vendor whom I do business with on a regular basis (I could have saved myself a 18 hr day and $250 in travel expenses by staying home and buying it from him when he got back).

This is my review of the spring Peotone 2014 show, and you can be sure that I will save myself the trouble in the Fall.

I was expecting a volume of vendors with a good variety which I did not find there. I was also expecting motivated sellers who are willing to negotiate and are there to make sales which I also did not find there.

While I can see it could be fun if I were retired and this was my hobby or had just won the lottery - this show, the items, and the sellers are not for me. Signs and collectible advertising is my hobby, business, and passion, but this show (and I assume others alike) just did not do it for me.

I do not wish to offend anyone there, just wanted to let others know who may be planning time off work, spending money on traveling, or time away from their families thinking there will be lots to buy and at realistic prices, just to be dissapointed as I was.

My suggestion if your going just to look or have fun, then that's perfect. If your looking to buy stuff, don't count on seeing much - especially stuff that's acutally priced fairly / to sell.

I have been to them in the past and when the weather is not an issue the insided vendors are usually sold out. The outside will be full of pumps and stuff. I will continue to go as long as the weather doesnt forbid me from doing so.

Thanks, Phil

Greg,
I came as a buyer and paid to get in on sat. during set up. Needless to say they were predicting 18" of snow as of Mon. and that changed daily. Sat morning they were expecting 8" of snow fall that night... as you see sunday morning it was 3" or so. I was going to stay but left at 9:15pm and got home at 2:00am do to ice storm that was going to hit at my house.

I would say over half of the vendors did not make it do to weather! I know outside was very slim vendors also do to weather and how cold it was.
Blame mother nature for the show attendance. As far as prices... it's like ebay and every where else some people just ask crazy prices for stuff.

Looking for anything from Hoosier Pete, Platolene 500 and Red Bird.

I had already heard that many vendors didn't show this year because of possible bad weather, but I went anyway.was I a little disappointed at the turnout?yes I was. But I was still happy to see old friends, and did buy a set of lenses. But better for those vendors to be on the safe side than off in a ditch,or worse because of bad weather. I usually go to Peotone twice a year, and always find some good buys, many times at the end of the show. Don't let this one time( because of unforeseen circumstances) taint the show for you.,Its usually a great show, spring or fall!

Looking for gas,oil related clocks, especially neon and spinners .clock repair available. Mick

The show was advertised as Sunday only - early birds at 6am.

I highly doubt Saturday was any better of a buying environment.

Weather may have been a factor in attendance on both sides, but again I doubt it prevented over half the vendors showing up. If by chance it really did, I'm guessing their items and prices would have been consistent with the rest of the show.

This motivated seller SOLD over 16K!!! LOL
I also bought a few signs at the show and bought 2 signs in the auction.
Vendor and Public turnout was WAY down due to weather and the spring peotone is a little softer than the fall...
Roberta and I enjoyed seeing everyone and getting out for the weekend even if the weather was not cooperating.
See you in the fall!!!!
For someone complaining about prices YOU seem to be asking twice the retail price on alot of your items on ebay!!!
I will also provide examples like you did...
beat up goodrich $1500?? (twice retail or more!)
common sinclair restroom $1225 (twice the retail!)
plastic sinclair sign face 350 dollars???? WOW!
Lastly YOU LISTED YOUR SHELL GLOBE FOR $1500 THEN 1450, NOW YOUR DOWN TO 495!!! <<<See his completed items!!!

as for vendor numbers, that was not a typical Peotone show, at least from my experience.

as for outrageous pricing... you'll find that at any show. some will be vendors who don't use ebay/internet and are a little out of scope with reality, and others are just plain over-priced. but you have to consider where these vendors are getting items? Like most of us, they are buying from auctions, ebay, & other collectors... so in order to make a profit, they have to mark it up from that.

there are always deals to be had from some still, and you will always see a better variety of unique items at a show more than you would on ebay.
