I just picked up this "Lubrication" sign and was wondering if anyone knows anything about this type of sign. It appears to be made of plaster and wood. The letters are cast and held together on two wood rails. It's about 5 1/2' long with 5" tall letters. Does anyone know what oil company might have used these (Texaco?) and what years it might have been produced/used? Thanks.

It is Gulf. These were widely used on Gulf stations. In fact, some can still be seen on the 60's stations that are still around.

of course, I am assuming the letters are blue.

The letters are actually white but I think that's because most if not all the paint has burned off due to the sun. It appears they were painted white however from day one.

Looks like those "MARFAK LUBRICATION" signs mounted above the service bay of Texaco stations to me...just one opinion.

Texaco lettering is green.

...they're not Gulf...they're much smaller than anything Gulf used outdoors...the earlier Gulf letters were porcelain enamel and a different font, the later letters from the 60's were plastic and a different font...anyway, I doubt 'plaster and wood' letters would have been deemed suitable for outside use...these look more like something that would have gone indoors, in the lubrication bay, out of the weather - some oil companies used elaborate cabinets in the back of the lube bay, to house equipment and stock...not sure what they're called, but someone on this site does...

I think you are right that these would have been used only inside and it also explains why they are still in such good condition. If they are not specific to a oil company but to an equipment manufacturer that might explain why the letters only show traces of white paint and not some oil company color.
If anybody else can provide some more information that would be great! Thanks to all who have chimed in up to this point.
