...they're not Gulf...they're much smaller than anything Gulf used outdoors...the earlier Gulf letters were porcelain enamel and a different font, the later letters from the 60's were plastic and a different font...anyway, I doubt 'plaster and wood' letters would have been deemed suitable for outside use...these look more like something that would have gone indoors, in the lubrication bay, out of the weather - some oil companies used elaborate cabinets in the back of the lube bay, to house equipment and stock...not sure what they're called, but someone on this site does...
