I really love the early signs from the teens and twenties; was able to buy this seldom seen Quaker Tire Sign. Many decades of "Station" grime still on it; cleaned it just a bit but love the Patina. Found a couple of ads for the tires; seems to date around 1919.

Heh! Actually (and you probably knew this, Dave - but I'm sure there are those who don't) 'non-poisonous' refers to the absence of tetraethyl lead, which was in the headlines after several deaths at the Standard refinery in Bayway, NJ:

http://www.wired.com/2013/01/looney-gas-and-lead-poisoning-a-short-sad-history/

...Gulf No-Nox was marketed as 'non-poisonous' as well, as it also contained no lead...

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...
