Well, it definitely takes the rust off and litho. Not advisable on cans unless you want the litho to come off with the rust.

Ive used wood bleach ( oxalic acid ) with great success. comes as a powder, mix with water and soak your can overnite completely submerged. You will find that it does a great job most of the time. never had it hurt the paint but you never know. Used it on some unreadable signs and got displayable ones afterwords. Definatley worth trying. I wouldn't hesitate using it on that can, i think you would be pleasantly surprised! I would say the worst side will be as good as the other when finished and the other better also.
