Just got my first visible pump and the cylinder is glued in with silicone. I'm not talking about a little around the outside, it's outside, inside and underneath. Any ideas about how to get it loose without breaking it? It's not caulking it is clear silicone.

Use a razor blade and it should do the job.

Thank you but razor blade won't do it, it's under the glass and inside as well. I thought about the heat and came to the same conclusion.

Use a dentist pick. Pick away, I don't care how long it takes you, your chances are still less than 50% this will work. Don't and I say again DON'T try and see if the cylinder is loose, let the cylinder tell you it is loose. Keep in mind this cylinder has been under pressure for over 70 years, and it just waiting to expand.
I remember doing this on my St. Louis pump, I still remember the sound of the cracking.

Lowes and Home Depot sell a silicone/caulk "remover" that you brush on and it softens it up. Have used this many times on tubs and vanities to remove the silicone without damaging the surround. It has a green tint to it.

Hmmm, maybe denatured alcohol, read that it softens silicone. One good thing about silicone is that it should delaminate from the glass if you can get to it. I think id work the silicone with razor blades, sharp tools, and then soak it for a while for the stuff you cant reach?

"goof off" brand sells a caulking remover that dissolves silicone as well. It says its good for use on glass. I have used their products and they work great. Home Depot sells some of the line, but I'm not sure about this particular product.

...silicone? sounds like an old restoration to me, and not something that was used when the unit was pumping gas?

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

Maybe with a piece of music wire (think spiral wound guitar string) like one would cut a windshield out of a car with? Very slow with something as lube on the wire like soap to keep it from grabbing the silicone?
