I have circa 1940's Snap-On K77 Rolling cabinet and KR23 top box, in great condition but needing stripped and repainted.

I've been saving them with an eye towards restoration, but times are tough here. I need to get out of debt so I can go back into debt in August when I get married.

So, my question is, how valuable / sought-after are these things? Any general idea of worth would help me decide whether it's worth letting them go.

Old Snap-on tools are very collectible. Put them on eBay with whatever reserve that would make you happy and see where the auction goes. That way you will see what kind of interest there is and what they're worth.

Ebay is generally a horrible measuring stick of real value, and I would think most of the seasoned members here know that.

Using Ebay as a "fishing" tool is even less worthwhile. People are looking for steals that beat what they saw on a tag in a reputable shop, by and large. Usually by a large degree. Unless something offered is a "holy grail" item, value is, overall, diminished in their venue.

Not that I don't use Ebay (obviously), but only when it's expedient. For things that I really hold dear, one-to-one communication is the only way.

Not sure of value but they are collectible. Really don't know what "seasoned members" are, oh well. For someone trying to sell an item, there are a number of options. One can take it to an auction like IG, MI Gas or Vic's and maybe upwards of a couple hundred people will look at it. An ad in a local paper, maybe if lucky a hundred people will be interested enough to read the ad. Selling it here will at least get more "look sees" but nothing compared to ebay. Thousands can look and determine if they are interested. The final decision is yours and I hope you get what you want for them.
On determining the value, the old saying is true; "An item is only worth what someone is willing to pay. No more, no less". Now you being the owner they may be more valuable to you than what others are willing to pay. Final decision of course is yours, hopefully you will find the right buyer.

Why is it that I hear Rocket J. Squirrel replying to the last post by steveinlanc?
Or is it Sherman....... guess it could be either one, but I think Rocky fits it best.

I agree that auctions are their best way to sell or buy and both parties get what they are willing to pay for the item. eBay uses the "reserve" to help you protect that bottom dollar you want for an item. A regular auction has great benefits as you can attend the sale and promote or portect your investment. Bringing buyers and sellers together is as old as time itself. CAVEAT EMPTOR.
BTW, nice tool box.

Ebay is by far TOPS in getting a true value for an item, It is pretty much dead on on value compared to any Price Guides out there. Larger items are tough because of the shipping involved, But a RARE and valuble item will pull it's own to the right person, Which you would never find if it was not for ebay

Bob, do I need to okay my comments through you before I can reply to a post? Did I miss that memo? I thought that all members could reply to any and all posts, hopefully without being called names. Thanks for reminding me why I don't post here very often.

Bob R. I do apologize for what it looks like I said in my previous post..... that wasn't what I meant to say at all. If you look at the posting time you posted yours just before I posted mine. I never saw what you wrote until afterwards.
I was commenting on only the last post by steveinlanc.
I thought your post was thoughfull and very well stated.
Once again apologies to Bob.

Sorry so long in coming back to this. Ebay's recent changes only reinforce my belief that some things just can't be measured accurately (or fairly) based on ebay results. They control the game, however they see fit.

BUT in any case, I have these tool boxes and they are located here in Lancaster, PA. If anyone wants to offer me what they think they would most pay for what they see, I can deliver to you at any show in Hershey or Carlisle for actual gas cost at the time.

I looked and looked for reasonable price comparisons, and these things are rare enough that all I could really find was people showing off the ones they had with no intention of selling. I honestly hate that, because I like to have a basis on which to defend an asking price.

So you tell me. How much is either, or both, worth to you? I'm not (yet) going to set a deadline like I did with the Packard kit, mainly because I'm going to be away from the 'puter too much next few days. But I know there's only so far the offers will go, and when I get the one that tells me I am closer to paying for my wedding without selling my truck I will post that one or both are spoken for.

I was sooooo happy scoring these puppies, but I guess scoring the woman kinda beats that in the pants, and I gotta give her a day to remember.

Send your offer(s) off-list and I'll keep track of 'em until it either levels off or gets ridiculous and has to stop.

Maybe I shouldn't give my .02 worth, but it never stopped me before. Really how different is ebay from any other auction, they all have requirements for payment, fees, etc. and the item is worth what the winning bidder is willing to pay. You're asking people here to bid without a starting $ amount, something that never would happen at an auction. No offense, but more than one person has gotten a dollar amount bid on auctions here and then pulled the item to sell it on ebay or to a person not a member here. All they were looking for was a reserve price, information gathered by what the Oldgas members bid. I can't say that this is what you are doing, all I can say is I have questions?

I agree with Bob, eBay will bring you what it is worth, probably not what You think it is worth, Remember CONDITION is everything. Put a price what you want for it and see what it gets for responses

Everyone has their own opinion, which is fine. I'm glad to see him not list on ebay, but here on Oldgas.

I don’t see anything wrong with steveinlanc asking for someone to email offers, and if he accepts...then great. I don’t think he could make it any easier; after all it’s his to sell how he sees it.

You never know, someone may even get them at a fair price.

steveinlanc, get ready to get a boatload of emails with 20.00 offers which include shipping and insurance. LOL

Good Luck.
Kim
