Progress is slow but sure. I have had the good fortune to find a reasonable looking valve for my pump, but the handle is stamped steel. I believe the original may have been cast. I haven't found a source for the handle alone. I also wonder if the external pump handle could be original, or if it might have been replaced at some time in its life. Any guidance, as always, is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Ron Scobie has a wide variety of handles for the gate valves.I believe that he also has the handle for the external pump for early Frys.Cast iron pump handle (for external pump) $60 Dave

Go to the Search tab on this web site and type in "fry external pump questions". There is a photo of a Fry 17 with external pump and handle. The pump owner may be able to tell you whether the pump handle is original on that pump. Joe

Who is the manufacturer of the valve...Powell, Williams, etc.? It should be on the side along with the size. All the 17s that I have found were equipped with Williams 1 1/4" valves. They all had a cast handle. Dave

The one pictured in this thread is correct for the external pump. As far as the gate valve goes, well, that is another question. http://www.oldgas.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=629225&page=2

Yes. Ron Scobie has several different gate valve handles available, I am not yet sure which is 'correct'. I am a realist, though. Devices wear and break, parts get replaced, so 'original' is not always a feasible option. My gate valve is a McDonald Dubuque 1-1/4". It is probably not half as old as the pump, but IMHO, with an appropriate handle it will be more believable as an 'authentic' replacement than the repops I have seen, and it only set me back a Jackson rather than a pair of Franklins! The cast handles definitely are important toward the overall appearance and will be a worthwhile investment. It's getting better all the time!

The gate valve on my later model 17 is a Williams 1-1/4" and it has a cast iron handle. The handle shown in the thread listed above matches the pump handle shown on the pump I found by searching for "fry external pump question" (June 11, 2015 posting).

Darken the brass with ammonia fumes and put several coats of paint on the handle and "age" the paint and it will look great. Dave

Well, who knew what was lurking under that ugly rubber cover?! At least this will do until I get a correct one.
