Kim, Regarding your statement that "the decal does not add or subtract value, just adds to appearance" I beg to differ.
Pictured are two Direct Service sets. The set on the left has photocopies of the meters. These are not original to the set. When I bought this set I was aware of this and paid accordingly. Please note these photocopied meters were added to the set only to improve the appearance. These are not high quality copies that would fool a collector. Again, I was aware they were copies when I bought the set. The second set is completely original and I also paid accordingly. The lettering on both sets is pretty darn close, so the only difference in price would be due to the original versus replacement paper meters.
I paid $300.00 more for the set with the original paper meters than I paid for the set with photocopied replacement meters. I feel that the original decal DOES add substantial value versus a replacement label.
Please understand I am not trying to pick a fight on this subject, you are completely free to do whatever you want with your stuff. I just want to make it clear that from a collectors standpoint there is a huge difference between 100% original and altered/modified.
If/When I trade or sell my Direct Service set with the photocopied meters I will make sure that the fact the labels are replacements will be fully understood by the buyer.
