I know most on this site don't like reproduction signs but I have an older A.O. Smith 483 and looking for the porcelain signs for the front are very expensive. I found a repro. porcelain coated sign on E-bay that is very reasonable. What is odd is all these repro's show a manufacture date of 5-21-90. Wondering if anybody knows about these signs, Most are the Sky chief variety with prices fluctuating high and low. I don't see many Fire chief. Thanks

Their were a lot of these reproduced with that date on them. They were made as reproductions for use in decorations and pump restorations. Ron Scobie used to have some but wasn't going to order any more after his stock runs out. You might contact him, as his prices are VERY realistic.

Maybe the Company that produced the signs wanted to ensure that "down the road"; they would be harder to sell as originals....

And/or; perhaps the date is a date important to the Manufacturer? Such as a starting date for them?
