I am restoring my first pump, a Gilbarco 96ER with sight glass. I want everything to look as realistic as possible but without gasoline the sight glass looks empty. As I remember when actual gas was being pumped the sight glass was red or blue depending on what gas was being pumped.
The question is ....What's the best way to make the sight glass colored red (for regular gas). I would prefer not to use liquid because of leaks, etc. Is there such a thing as transparent glass paint that I could use to paint the inside of the sight glass ?
Has anyone done this, or have a better method ??

What about getting some RTV silicone, dying it the color you want, pour it into the sight glass with the open end up and letting it set up? Then you'd have a tinted liquid-looking RTV mold inside the sight glass. I've never tried it but it's a thought.

Good idea and worth a try, but I can't imagine what I could dye RTV with!

How about a red, blue,or yellow sharpie marker, don't like it wipe it clean?

may have found an answer to my problem. Amazon sells a "DecoArt Glass Stain Paint 6-Pot Set" for $3.92. I think it will work.
I will post another question on color!

It there anyone on the forum who remembers what the typical color seen in a sight glass was ??
I have a vague recollection in was an amber color. May have varied with the brand of gas being sold though.

The sight glasses in my shop all look like dark iced tea or decaf coffee. If I were going to try to repliate that, I would let some wood stain dry on the inside of the sight glass. I have done this before by filling the glass with stain and setting in the sun for a few days. Does the trick on other glass surfaces, should work on this also.

Super Shell was very red,Shell Regular was yellow,this was before they went to 3 grades.Today they do not dye it,all clear.
