We had a great time at the Columbus gas and oil show. It is always a lot of fun to be with your friends and share the things that we have in common. There seemed to be a few less vendors than last year. A lot of the vendors complained that because the auction was before the show officially started, everyone had spent their money. It seemed to me that if the auction was on Friday night in a separate room, it would have been better for everyone. But you never can please everyone.

Yeah Rex, its always good to see old friends at the shows. Thats what makes this hobby so much fun. Karen is just now starting to get hungry again after eating that huge piece of cake. LOL.
Vendor count was down a little, and buyers seemed to be down alot. Its a real problem when the vendors start selling a day or two early. Buyers start thinking why bother going to the show on Friday if someone has been selling since Wednesday? How many people quit going to Iowa Gas for the same reason? Kind of ironic that promoters asked a few buyers to leave the inside sales area because it wasn't quite 8:00 AM, but they let vendors start selling a day and a half early.
It would be better for the show if the auction were held on Friday night or Saturday.
How many vendors stuck around for Saturday? Tway, Don and Walt were the only ones that I talked to that planned on staying.

well my 2 cents although i did not go to the show i had may vendors stop on the way to the show and on the way home. and all of them said the same thing rex did. the vendors where there long before the auction.... and the vendors are what make a show..lets take care of them 1st, than the auctions etc....... just my two cents . have a super day.... cheese [p.s. i did buy the wayne 60 pump and some cans in the auction and aummans always do a super job....]

Opinion from Inside vendor-Overall I did very good selling and some buying-Two diff opinions as to auction- some felt that money got spent at auction that would have been spent with vendors-others thought that buyers would have held their money for auction and not spent it befors auction with vendors-I had one buyer thurs nite speed 500.oo in My room as prices were too high at auction to get anything- there were a few people that raised their prices on items for sale after they saw what similar items went for in auction-Naturally they didnt sell them-I beleive that there are 2 diff schools of thought - at auctions for some it is a chance to show off how much they can spend to a room full of people-and they keep pushing up the price-they would never pay that price if the same item was offered from a vendor- the same buyers will spend 1/2 hour trying to beat you up for a few dollars on items you are offering- --It was a little discouraging to see a few early inside shoppers getting kicked out fri morn when the outside vendors already had a 2 hr head start on fri and a half a day or so selling on thursday-we pay the same space price for about 1/2 the selling time- Friday nite was good for me on room to room eventhough 1/2 or more of the people had left- sat morn was quiet- PS- there were a handfull of rooms open Wed nite that did decent-I think Jerry Sr and Jr- wives etc did a very good job- It is very hard to stop early selling etc especially in an outside show- If they want to have an auction- no problem- only change I would like to see is to have it in a diff room so that inside vendors could start setting up before 930 at night- thanks Don

I had to come back early on Friday for some company we were having and I wanted to make a pass through the inside and got kicked out because it was before 8:00. I also thought that was kind of funny since vendors outside had been selling since Wed. when I arrived. Missed you inside guys (Don, Rex, Bill Jim & Jodi).

I heard Karen had a ****load of cake...LOL

I wouldn't have a problem with the early buying and selling if the vendors stayed for the advertised show times. As it is most vendors are long gone Friday afternoon. Early trading and early pack up by vendors is not a problem for the retired guys, but many of us still have to work. I was able to take off Thursday and Friday to attend the show and auction, but there are lots of guys that don't bother going because they know the vendors won't be there Saturday. I quit going to Iowa Gas because I know that many vendors are gone by Thursday evening.
Its not good for the hobby when you make it hard for the buyers to buy. Think of it this way: You're new to the hobby, but you know that this is one of the best shows. Being new to the hobby, you're probably fairly young and don't have alot of disposable income. Therefore you decide to not take time off work, and you go to the show on Saturday morning. You arrive at the show location to find a nearly empty lot where the vendors are supposed to be. Would you be happy? I sure wouldn't! Sell early if you want, but stay for the advertised times of the show! Sellers wouldn't sell early if there weren't a few self serving buyers there wanting to buy early.
Karen, Jarvis and I went in the indoor area before 8:00 to see if Rex needed help setting up. He wasn't there yet so we stopped to talk to a friend. Don was across the aisle from where we were and I noticed he had a nice striped 5 gallon Sinclair Transmision Oil can. About the time I noticed the can we were "asked" to leave. I went back inside as soon after 8:00 as I could but Don had already sold the can (for a price I would have gladly paid). I didn't have a problem with not being able to buy early....rules are rules. We weren't in there to buy anyway, we were there to help Rex set up. There wasn't any consistancy to the rules however. If buyers weren't allowed to buy from the indoor vendors early, why were vendors allowed to leave (a day) early? That didn't leave me with a warm fuzzy feeling for the way the show was run. Don wasn't happy that they were running off potential buyers from the indoor vendors.
It would be better for the show if the auction was on Saturday afternoon rather than Thursday evening. Vendors would be more likely to stay for the advertised show times because the buyers would still be there on Saturday. I don't buy the argument that people will hold back on buying at the show so they can buy at the auction. The guys that were doing the serious bidding don't have the financial constraints that most of us have.
You can argue that vendors make a show. More precisly the merchandise. You can also argue that its the buyers with cash in hand that entice sellers to bring items to market. You need them both.

I agree with you guys 100% about vendors leaving early. About the only rule that Fred & I have with our show is we want vendors to stay a few hours on Sat. morning. You can set up Thurs. no problem, but have the courtesy to stay for awhile on Sat. because not everyone can make it Thurs. or Friday. And you never know if something good might roll in on Sat. (it has happened at Fred's just about everytime!!!) Keep supporting shows!!!!!! eBay can't replace seeing your friends & meeting new ones!!!

there is a WEDDING, FUNURAL, GRADUATION, BIRTHDAY PARTY,APPOINTMENT etc etc, THAT YOU WANT TO ATTEND, it don't matter what day of the week it is HELD. YOU WILL BE THERE.

I take a week off to go to Iowa Gas [to be there 2 1/2 days]. I stop at differant collectors going, and drive long hours to get home for work on Monday.

EVEN, IF nobody is allowed to sell till Thursday morning, YOU won't be 1st in line to buy at EVERYONES space ! We all see something for sale and think that the price will come down later [or because something ELSE didn't KNOCK YOUR SOCKS OFF !]. When we return, IT'S GONE. SOLD to the guy 1 step behind you the 1st time you saw it.

ron is right about the michigan show. he states a fact on how it is run, we are very layed back..... most of are vendors stay for both day with even more vendors coming in on sat. i also agree with ron on the one day show..... we are looking to move the show to a new location here in brighton michigan ... and also making it a one day show... cheese
