I went with my wife to an auction that listed a lot of glassware and sewing stuff. Nothing there for me, so I started poking around in an old barn. A young man came up to me and asked me what I was doing. He said that nothing was for sale in there. Just as he said that I spotted a case of GULF cans in the corner. I told him that I collect oil cans. He said that he would ask his dad if they were for sale. Dad came and said “we don’t have that old tractor anymore, what will you give me for the cans? Most of them are empty.”
Anyhow, I got them.
The Gulf cans are plastic with a metal top. I have been told that this was an experiment by Gulf and not many plastic metal top cans were made. Does anyone know why Gulf made a few of these plastic cans? See, it pays to listen to your wife.

Hey Rex,
Several companies used plastic cans with metal tops. I don't know if it was Canco or some other can company that made them, but they didn't make them long.
A friend of mine recently found a couple of plastic/metal Sinclair cans.

in the mid 1970's our coop farm delivery truck left us some plastic cans like that (without any printing on it exept on the top)to try it to se if we liked it. and we didn't because the can always colapsed when we tryd to push the spout into the top.
