Buy a decal, mount it on a piece of metal, distress it with some burnt umber, cover it with some matte clear coat and let it rot.
Cheap date and it can look old too.

I bought a repro Mobilgas Special plate for my unrestored M&S 80 and did the burnt umber trick to make it look old. Blue chip stamp decal was already there.
