Went out picking yesterday and the old timer had this old pump around the side of the house. He's moving to town soon so I asked if the pump was for sale. He said it will be soon and he knows it has some value. I just can't believe it's been parked outside and still has a lot of it intact. What information do I need from it so I can make a fair offer? Based on the picture, what would be a fair offer so that I could make a little profit and get it to someone who would want to restore it?

Looks like a tokheim 201, manufactured around 1924.
Value depends on if cylinder is original and has any defects. Does it have anything missing, gallon markers, ID tags, etc. Globe is a bonus. [img]http://[/img]

Also thanks to everyone reaching out and wanting to buy the globe, but I haven't purchased the pump yet. I just need some advice to get a good price to the owner and then pass it on to one of you collectors. I was thinking about offering 1k? Too much? Too little?

Consider that the pump book is quite a few years old by now. Lot of items in the petroliana world have appreciated a great deal since this book was published. HOWEVER, I'm not sure if the world of visible gas pumps has enjoyed those gains. Perhaps a "pump guy" will comment on this. John

If the cyl and globe are crack free, bb hit free, personally id offer 3K and feel like i got a buy from what i can see if rot free.

That is NOT a retail price for a restored pump. The price listed on ALL gas pumps in Jack’s book price guide is for an UN-restored pump, in good condition, not missing any parts and not including a globe.

With that being said, not all of Jack’s prices in the guide are accurate, not to mention the book is 6 years old now.

The best way to find a value is to look at past sales by researching this website for the same pump. You can also get an idea on Proxibid.com and look at past sales, but auctions are not always accurate. They can be grossly inflated sometimes.

Agree,any printed in ink price guide is obsolete the day it is printed,i.e. Gas pumps,collector cars,baseball cards,Hot Wheels,Beanie Babies.
Prices change extremely & fluctuate more than the weather..

In watching visibe pump prices recently, numerous pumps in similar condition are being lised at 1500-2000 and NOT selling quickly

In my opinion (similar to those opinions above), it’s a visible pump that isn’t common, but it’s not rare or fancy and sought after. I think the pump (if the glass is good) is worth 1900-2500. I think the weathered shell globe (if not cracked) is worth 500-800. So retail for the whole thing is about 2400-3300. If he wants it gone and you want a good deal, without ripping off the guy, offer 2000. If you love it and want it for yourself, and he won’t go that low, then you aren’t out of line paying 3000-3300 for it. Or any number in between that you are both happy with. Remember, this stuff usually just increases in value with time.

Thank you @Speedracer, that is what I was looking for. It's good to know that I wasn't too far off. All of the other advice was definitely helpful as well. Hopefully I've convinced the gentleman that I am serious about purchasing it and also that he needs to get the globe indoors and protected. I'll welcome any additional advice on the value or even how to protect it if it is purchased. If it's purchased, I'll update it here.

How to protect a globe? Treat it like fragile glass.......

Ha!!! Yes, of course. But isn't it weird how our mind shifts when we are interested in something? This globe has sat outside and survived decades of South Dakota weather, but I'm worried the slightest breath will break it.

Keep it away from kids, pets, flying objects and earthquakes and it should be good.

Around here though we usually have to worry about tornadoes and then flying pets/kids.
