Here is a globe that is on loan to me.
It was a brand of gasoline sold by the Sun Oil Companies of Canada Ltd. (NOT Sunoco, but the Canadian precursor - it's a long story...) in Southern Ontario, Canada, for about 10 years - from 1920 until 1930. Starlite was the name of a horse my grandfather owned. Starlite was sold alongside SUN Standard Gasoline, SUN Lubricating Gasoline, and Silent Chief Gasoline. All gasoline products were supplied to the Canadian Sun Companies by the McColl Frontenac refinery in Montreal. Lubricating oils were provided by HyVis, he was the Canadian importer/distributor of HyVis products. The stations also sold the MFI/Red Indian oils.
The Sun Oil Companies of Canada Ltd. were started by my great-grandfather in Brantford, Ontario, in 1885 and continued by my grandfather in Brantford, then Simcoe - and ceased operation in 1968. From 1932 until 1968, the company operated under the Miller Oil Company Ltd. name, after having been sued by Sunoco US for the name Sun. Sun US lost the lawsuit, after my grandfather was able to prove provenance of the name independently in Canada. However, he did sell the rights to the name to the Sun Oil Company in Philadelphia.
This globe is quite possibly the only one in existence. It is the property of the son of a man who was employed by my grandfather. There is only one lens - the globe was found under a workbench at the bulk station workshop in 1972, damaged, probably one step away from the scrap bin. The son converted it to a desklamp, and has kept it safe for the last 24 years. It has a tiny chip at 6 o'clock and is slightly rotated in the holder, which is metal.
He has kindly loaned it to me for photo-archival purposes, and I can't thank him enough. You da man, Paul!
