This question is for you old gassers that have or have had Wayne 70s. What's the story on the horse shoe tag above the site glass? Was it used on early pumps or only late pumps, I'm considering using one if it's correct for the mid to late forties.

I don't know the date of my pump, but it came with them on it. The pump was also a farm pump. Hope this helps.

Maybe Jack will know ?

I have three Wayne 70s and they all have it. One must be an earlier version as the most you could set the gas price for was 49.9 cents a gallon

To think there was a time when nobody would have thought that gas could be over 49.9 cents.

First of all we need to know which 70 you are asking about:
The one with the ad glass at the top of the pump. Or..
The one with the ad glass above the face?

And I think you are asking about the small horseshoe shape tag the read something like "This ?? must be full before ???", please excuse me, I sold all my pumps 10 years ago and am working off memory.

Even after all that, I don't think I can answer your question. I just went through the parts manuals for both types of 70s (1937 or 1950) and neither show the tag.
If there are anyone out there with 70s with original ID tags on them, it would be interesting to know if this tag was used on all of them, or on the early or on the late version.
Anyone interested, just post the serial number and I'll tell you what year your pump was made.

black.....What do you mean by "The pump was a farm pump?

Thanks you all, I really appreciate the response. Jack, My W70 has the ad glass at the top of the pump w/ site glass below it.
If it would help, the ID plate states "Cut 70C #124570 BD AN", and your memory is correct about the horse shoe tag.

Jack:

I didn't word that post correctly...

I was just stating that my pump came "off" a farm. Mine is a 4 ad glass, and came with the horse shoe tags on it. I will try and find the original ID tag and see if I can read it ? I took my veeder root to Joe and got an exchange. If memory serves me right, mine went to 99.9.... But that doesn't mean it wasn't replaced?

Jack, I found the tag and the ID # is 128250BDL. I would greatly appreciate it if you could tell me the month and year it was manufactured.

Thanks Doug

P.S. This is the nozzle you sold me.

Your pump was made in 1941, Wayne didn't indicate the month in their serial numbers. This was the first 70, introduced in 1937.

I just went through all my W-70 color literature and none of it shows the tag. Both Gas Pump Heaven and the old Vic's catalogs show a reproduction. Both list it for the W-60, only GPH list it for the W-70. Ah, we add to the mystery.

Blacktee.....
Your pump was also made in 1941, sorry month cannot be determined.

Horse shoe tag might have been required by Weights & Measure to assure hose was full before & after delivery for correct amount charged for.

If the customer before you drained the hose, you are charged for what was metered, But if you leave the hose full, you're not getting the correct amount.

Very few farmers bought pumps to use. Most pumps were furnished to the farmer by the distributor they bought fuel from.
When Commercial & farmers did buy, they bought the non-computing or clock face.

I think DB has hit the nail on the head. I have had several tall 70's and never found one in GA with that tag on it, Or in Alabama. Never found a 60 with them either.
Weights and Measures have different rules in different states, they are not Federal gov., but part of the State gov.

If that is the correct nozzle on that pump there would be no way to drain the hose, unless the check valve between the body and spout fails. ALL 3/4" nozzles NOW have check valves. There were some like the OPW #1 that did not.

Nice looking face there Doug !!!!!
Those nice white #'s look good.

Thanks Jack

Mighty nice of you taking the time to look that bit of information up for me. Always wondered about it.
