Hey gang, its been a while since I have been here, so hello. I tend to go from project to project and that includes Mopars, gas pumps, coke machines and a full 50s diner in my home.

OK- to my point. I was doing my best to sell and move to my 175 acres in Idaho but it looks like I ma stuck in Northern Nevada until the economy improves, if I ever leave at all! That said I am re-doing my gas pump island thats in front of my shop. I am lucky and have over 4,000 sq ft of shop and in front if a large three car bay which is part of it. I no longer work in this portion, as it houses the finished cars.

I used to just have a couple of old pumps on it. However my issue is this, once I restore a pump I dont like it outside for the most part and move them into my inside room, which is full now. I want to do this pump island but want it nice. I am getting ready to redo a bunch of landscaping and once its all done, the entire area surrounding the shop will be in asphalt. I am going to do 2 pumps and am considering the following.

#1: I MAY want a cover so keep the sun from directly hitting the pumps and keep the snow off my items.Do you guys have an inland, any neat ideas, ect or various pics or things to recommend.

#2: I would love a light pole but simply cant afford to pay big bucks for one. I do have light toppers/ lights see attached. I have power, water and air to the current pad. I was thinking of doing a wood light pole and using one of these toppers or both.

#3: Im going to use this pad as the base but want to round the ends or make it nicer. I am also considering covering it or painting it once done??? any suggestions or ideas.

#4: I want to ad an air station but again too broke to spend big $$$ on an air meter. Any cheap suggestions? I can metal fab and am thinking of just making somethign that look replica or something I can paint and do myself and use and air line? I know thats asking a lot but there has to be some old school stuff I can make look like a meter or something.

#5; Water, what do you guys use?????

In any case, any suggestions?????? any favorite pics or can you show me what you used???

I don't have a pump island and won't unless I abandon my farm display and sell my windmill.But,if I do build one I'll build the whole thing out of wood.Fast,easy and in my case I can move it around when I want to change display layouts.

I think your idea of using wood light poles is a good one.Aside from cost,working with wood offers several advantages including ease ot adding on and ease of mounting other island features like price signs and towel boxes.

As for air and water hoses,many times they were just coiled up and hung on hooks.Easy to do if those poles are wood.You might also consider other common island pieces like wringer barrels,towel boxes and trash barrels.

Just things to think about.Best of luck.

I am about to build a pump island also and was hopeing for some Idea. I think I will pour a pad and bolt everything down I do not live in a bad spot but things still may grow legs.I have a couple of island lights I am going to put on a T post but I am not going to put my eco 37 out there I am going to make a dummy air meter out of a piece of I beam paint it and screw a air meter face on it and a crank handle. How could any body named old Iron like a wooden light pole? HA! HA!

Seems like you could disassemble the light and simply install a long pipe and bolt the flange to the concrete for not too much $$.

No idedas out there yet? I am in the middle of redoing the entire front yard and am going to have to blend it with some class. I would think someone on here has an island or ideas and some pics. Guess I will have to do more research on line.

A ton of photos of vintage gas stations with canopies on Yahoo. Just type in "vintage gas station photos, old gas station photos, etc...

Your off to a good start with the already in place layout. I like the yard hydrant , that with an old weatherd short chunk of hose and a radiator watering can and your water theme is done. I like to see old tire stands with a gangster white wall in it,If you cant afford an oil rack at least a few qt. oil bottles here and there. The lite pole would be affordable if done in (EMT) pipe. You can weld it, and if you dont have a bender you can buy the pipe and all the different off-sets to get your long sweep type bends to get that 90 or 45 degree look you might want. Check out your home depot for all that. From what I could see from you photo ,you really cant come off the house for a island cover and keep the same pitch. Maybe something like a four corner support with some simple and cheap lumber and a corrugated tin roof. Dont forget motion lites to guard your goodies. Roger
