Wow! I figured some of you old geezers would find humor in my Star trek reference. No I'm not a Treky. Just a goofy memory that came to mind.
Anyway. After reading some of your comments I feel very blessed to have come upon this piece and, at least at this time, it's value really doesn't matter because I will surely be keeping it for some time. I do wish it was not quite so rusty. Even on the side that looks nicer, the paint is like powdery. It rubs off on your finger when you rub it. Like it is oonnnly JUST winning the battle over the rust that is trying to come through from beneath.
Now, we can all cast our opinions on when rust changes from patina to junk. But it's kind of like this too. If you lived in 1949. And owned a Mobil station. Would you want a rusty old oil can rack in front of your station representing your business or would you clean it up and throw a coat of paint on it. I surely would do the latter.
But again, in that this is only a hobby, and I don't own a Mobil station in 1949(damn it man!!), I can't help but look at the thought that this piece will never again be it's orginal self ounce it is touched.
Hmm..
